The fumi-e was a likeness of Jesus or Mary upon which Tokugawa authorities would force suspected Christians to trample to prove they were not Christians. Anyone who refused would be tortured and/or killed.

Desha This...I lived in an area of Japan where many Christians were martyred. My small town had a tourist spot "Shrine to the Christian Martyrs". It was right next to the town's Buddhist temple. They were both up on a hill and on my jogging route I always went up and down that hill...the question of the day for the jog was "which direction?" Shrine first or temple first? #lifeinruraljapan ?☺️❤️ I'm looking forward to watching the movie for this! 7y
