Pickpick

This collection of short mysteries featuring early cases investigated by Inspector Montalbano is a low pick, as the quality of the stories are mixed. However, I always enjoy spending time with Montalbano and friends.

The setting on Sicily is perfect for prompt 8 (“Features the ocean“) of #52bookclub24.

Librarybelle This series is on my to read list. I‘m slowly working my way through the Donna Leon books first. 3mo

Crazeedi @Librarybelle Leon is soooo good, but I have to rate Camilleri even better! You will love!! If you can find audiobooks you will laugh, the reader is excellent!! 3mo
Crazeedi I love love love Montalbano!! Have you listened to any of his books? They are hilarious!! And there is an Italian TV series too! Subtitled but really fun 3mo
Librarybelle @Crazeedi Good to know!! 3mo
kwmg40 @Librarybelle @Crazeedi I too love the audiobooks! Grover Gardner is great. He also does a fantastic job with the sci-fi Vorkosigan series. And I second the TV adaptation recommendation! 3mo

I probably won't get through all of these, but here are my picks for the #CloakandDaggerChristmas challenge hosted by @Ruthiella:

1. An English Murder by Cyril Hare
2. The Maid by Nita Prose
3. Stockings and Spells by Nancy Warren
4. The Hidden Staircase by Carolyn Keene
5. A Small Death in Lisbon by Robert Wilson
6. 4:50 From Paddington by Agatha Christie
7. Death at Sea by Andrea Camilleri
8. Peril at Owl Park by Marthe Jocelyn

Ruthiella Ah, but I see you have cleverly used a few planned group reads! Great way to make the books do double duty! 👍 I was thinking if I fudged it, I could use the next Nancy Drew title for the “child detective” prompt. After all, she was only 16 in the original books. 🤔 5mo
kwmg40 @Ruthiella I too considered using the Nancy Drew title for the 8th title, but wanted an excuse to read the next book in the delightful Aggie Morton series. This one has a Christmas setting too! 5mo

quietjenn @kwmg40 the Aggie Morton is one of my possibilities as well, especially when I saw it was set at Christmas (and I already have it checked out from the library). 5mo
kwmg40 @quietjenn I had planned simply to read the next Aggie Morton book and it was a nice surprise to me too when I saw it was set at Christmas. Good timing! 5mo
jlhammar Oooh, nice list! I was also considering counting Nancy for the child detective prompt, but I‘ll hopefully get Flavia in. The Aggie Morton series sounds great! 5mo
LeahBergen I‘m hoping to get to An English Murder, too. 5mo
Texreader I am so looking forward to playing #wintergames with you for the #snowangels! ❄️ 👼 5mo
Emilymdxn This is amazing and I ABSOLUTELY want to join in, thank you fellow snow Angel! 5mo
kwmg40 @jhammar Flavia is a great option too! 5mo
kwmg40 @LeahBergen Very convenient that this was chosen for the #goldenagecrimeclub. It's actually going to be a reread for me. 5mo
kwmg40 @Texreader @Emilymdxn I'm so looking forward to #wintergames with the #snowangels. It'll be fun if a number of us are doing this challenge together. 5mo
Emilymdxn I‘ll be having a go at it for sure! Winter is a great time for murder mysteries 🥰 5mo
kwmg40 @Emilymdxn Couldn't agree more! 5mo
Larkken I've never triedthe Aggie Morton series, maybe I'll try this one! I'm liking that it's set at Christmas... 5mo
Nessavamusic Very fun! 5mo
kwmg40 @CogsOfEncouragement It's certainly nice to be able to fit #NancyDrewBR into this challenge! 5mo
kwmg40 @Larkken I hope you enjoy it. I found the first book charming and fun. 5mo

I couldn‘t sleep last night so finished off my first book for #20in4
Another sadness as this almost takes me to the end of the series and this one was published posthumously following Camilleri‘s death. Usual great Fayre from this author, always great to spend time with Montalbano and his zany crew. #SeriesLove2023 @TheSpineView Only one book to go in the series now.

#JumpStart2023 @Clwojick @LizPixie

TheSpineView Sorry you couldn't sleep. Still having trouble with heartburn? 1y
Clwojick Totally random, but if it is heartburn… have you tried spearmint gum? It‘s the only thing that helps me,I just chew on 2-3 pcs at once, and it normally calms after 15 mins or so. If this is an ongoing issue, I‘m sure you‘ve tried everything, but I figured I‘d suggest it in case you hadn‘t heard of this trick. I just found out about it a year ago, and it‘s been a life changer for me. 1y
Andrew65 @TheSpineView still issues but not as bad as it was. On this occasion my wife was up being sick every 20 minutes through the night, we think it might be her passing a gallstone. 1y

A young Don Juan is found murdered in front of his apartment building early one morning, and an elderly couple is reported missing after an excursion to the ancient site of Tindari - two seemingly unrelated cases for Inspector Montalbano to solve amid the daily complications of life at Vigàta police headquarters.

EadieB But when Montalbano discovers that the couple and the murdered young man lived in the same building, his investigation stumbles onto Sicily's brutal 'New Mafia', which leads him down a path more evil and more far-reaching than any he has been down before.
The fifth in the hit Italian crime series, Excursion to Tindari is another darkly comic detective story featuring Inspector Montalbano.
1y
Andrew65 You are ploughing through these. 🎄🎄🎄 1y
EadieB Camilleri deals with the Mafia in this one but it is the new mafia not following the old rules. There is mystery and humor in this book along with snappy dialogue. I look forward to reading the sixth book in the series. The Scent of Night. If you love books of police procedural with laughter, then you would love these books. 1y

Montalbano's gruesome discovery of a lovely, naked young woman suffocated in her bed immediately sets him on a search for her killer. Among the suspects are her aging husband, a famous doctor; a shy admirer, now disappeared; an antiques-dealing lover from Bologna; and the victim's friend Anna, whose charms Montalbano cannot help but appreciate.

EadieB But it is a mysterious, reclusive violinist who holds the key to this murder. This is the fourth book in the Montalbano series. It is very humorous and entertaining as all his books. The characters are unique and the mysteries are ones that plots leave you wanting to read on. I‘m looking forward to reading the next book in the series and if you love mysteries that keep you guessing then you would love these books. 1y

In the third book in Andrea Camilleri's Inspector Montalbano series, the urbane and perceptive Sicilian detective exposes a viper's nest of government corruption and international intrigue in a compelling new case. When an elderly man is stabbed to death in an elevator and a crewman on an Italian fishing trawler is machine-gunned by a Tunisian patrol boat

EadieB off Sicily's coast, only Montalbano suspects the link between the two incidents. His investigation leads to the beautiful Karima, an impoverished housecleaner and sometime prostitute, whose young son steals other schoolchildren's midmorning snacks. But Karima disappears, and the young snack thief's life as well as Montalbano's is on the line . 1y
EadieB This is the 3rd book in the Montalbano series by Andrea Camilleri. It is located in Sicily where wine, women and mystery are plenty. There are two mysteries going on and the link of these mysteries is seen early on by Montalbano. There are plenty of humorous situations happening with lots of twists and turns throughout the book. Montalbano comes to terms with fatherhood and the death of his father and a young boy on the run from killers. 1y
EadieB The relationship between Livia and Montalbano is also discussed. Lots of entertaining fun and if you love crime with mystery then you will love these books. 1y

The Terracotta Dog | Andrea Camilleri
post image

#TheTerracottaDog #AndreaCamilleri #WinterReadathon

The Terracotta Dog, the second book in Andrea Camilleri's Inspector Montalbano series, opens with a mysterious tête-à-tête with a Mafioso, some inexplicably abandoned loot from a supermarket heist, and some dying words that lead Inspector Montalbano to a secret grotto in a mountain cave where two young lovers dead fifty years and still embracing are watched over by a life-size terracotta dog.

EadieB Montalbano's passion to solve this old crime takes him, heedless of personal danger, on a journey through the island's past and into a family's dark heart amid the horrors of World War II.
This one is better than the first book even though I gave the first book 5 stars. I loved this book. It was a great story and the characters were quite unique. The plot was good and trying to figure out who placed the bodies in the cave was interesting.
1y
EadieB I love Montalbano and all his humorous antics and phrases. The Terracotta Dog is followed by the third title in this satirical and humorous series, The Snack Thief. I am really looking forward to the next installment. If you love humor with mystery then you will love these books. 1y

The Shape of Water is the first in Andrea Camilleri's wry, brilliantly compelling Sicilian crime series, featuring Inspector Montalbano. The novel is set in the Sicialian town of Vigata, the body of engineer Silvio Luparello is found at the Pasture, a trash filled empty place populated only by whores and drug dealers.

EadieB The coroner‘s verdict is that he died from natural causes that Salvo immediately discounts. The plot begins to unravel and I am quickly reading until the very end. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series, The Terracotta Dog. Andrea Camilleri writes with humor that creates a funny police procedural. If you love humor with mystery then you would love these books. 1y
