Guess Who, Haiku | Deanna Caswell
post image

My favorite coworker at the library, who has also worked as a nature educator, created a haiku challenge for #NationalPoetryMonth. She‘s provided photo inspiration (complete with ID). I chose the pictured and tried my hand:

Delicate flower
I am not. Instead, call me
a sensitive fern.

If this is the kind of nerdy wordiness that appeals to you, I‘m sure she‘d be thrilled to have more entries!

Bookwormjillk I love it! 3w
monalyisha @Bookwormjillk The more I learned about sensitive ferns, the more I felt correct in my assertion: e.g. “The name comes from its sensitivity to frost, the fronds dying quickly when first touched by it.” Girl, same. 😂🥶😅 3w

DebinHawaii Brilliant! 🌿💚🌿 I often joke that I am a “delicate blossom” but now I will say sensitive fern instead! 😉🤣 3w
monalyisha @DebinHawaii I was so tickled (and pleased) to learn its name! 3w

This is a great read for a potential career day to teach children about the different types of uniforms there are for different important jobs.

I glanced out the window from my “office space” (dining table) and saw this scene. I appreciate the beauty of winter now, but I won‘t so much in March. 😉

4 ⭐ I was trying to figure out what reason this book could possibility be one of the 100 most banned books from 1990-2000. I thought maybe the crazy pictures that seem a little “druggy”. But apparently it was banned for spreading the occult and making witches seem harmless, nice, and fun. My main thought was that the illustrator was a friend of Salvador Dali. It doesn‘t bother me that this is about a witch.

LibrarianRyan The book doesn‘t bother me at all, and it shouldn‘t be banned, but seriously, if you have not read this, do. Just for the illustrations. #BBRC #BannedBook 2y
CarolynM OMG!! Ban Mem Fox? She‘s a living treasure, everyone in Australia loves her and her books. What is wrong with people? 2y
LibrarianRyan @CarolynM I know right. She was a staple when I was still a children's librarian. That is why i thought this book being on the list was soooooo odd. 2y

Mouse Loves Love | Lauren Thompson
post image

Mouse Loves Love is an animal fantasy picture book by Lauren Thompson with illustrations by Bucket Erdogan. This story is about a mouse that follows his sister around while she makes a Valentine card for him. Mouse secretly watches as his sister gathers ribbon, paper, lace, and other craft supplies and turns it all into a card for him. This book would be best used for storytelling followed by a small activity since it is aimed for young students.

emilypalkovich This link shows several different ways for students to make their own Valentine's Day card like Mouse's sister did: https://kidsactivitiesblog.com/118125/simple-homemade-valentine/. An appropriate UDL guideline for this book is to provide Expression and Communication. This is important for young students and can be done through the activity. An EL strategy for this story would be number 44. focus on thinking skills; predict and observe. 3y
emilypalkovich This can be done by having students predict what Mouse's sister is doing with all the supplies she is gathering.

This adorable book would be considered animal fiction because it features animal characters who talk and behave like humans. The book is about a mouse named Minka who is crafting a gift for her little sister. The little sister has no clue what Minka is making for her. At the very end, the craft is a lace heart shaped note that says “I love you.”

olivia_danko This Animal Fantasy would be best taught using UDL 1.1 (community artifacts) by making a lesson plan to make their own heart shaped note for a loved one at home. And 9.3 (develop self-assessment and reflection)
The ELS strategy I‘d use is EL 46 use discovery learning activities(hands-on-activities) giving students the chance to make their own heart shaped note.

DrSpalding Your pictures made me smile! This is your best post of the three being that you followed the rubric well here! Revise the others to be sure you are including all necessary elements according to the rubric. 3y
AlexRobinson What a cute book!! I‘d read this often in my preschool classroom! And your picture is too cute! Great UDL and EL strategies! I especially like your EL tool. Doing hands on is such an amazing way for NS as well as EL to learn more about a topic and make a visual representation of what the text is all about! Great ideas as well as resources!! 3y
