The Gene: An Intimate History | Siddhartha Mukherjee
post image
Pickpick

Absolutely fascinating from beginning to end. Mukherjee has a talent for weaving the often highly technical details of genetic research into a spellbinding narrative.

The first part of the book is a history of scientific discoveries; the second discusses ethical issues and the future of genetic manipulation. The history is interspersed with human anecdotes, some very personal. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

charl08 Great read. Although I should probably reread it to take more on board. 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa It's great isn't it! I'm almost finished too! 7y
Gezemice @charl08 I am thinking of the same thing. I won't remember much unless I re-read it. 7y
Gezemice @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Yes! I could not put (my audio) down. 7y

Binti goes home and takes Ogwu with her - resulting in more culture clashes, issues of acceptance, belonging, tradition vs. individuality. The biotechnology details were fascinating - a space ship that gives birth - genius. These books are breath of fresh air. Except for the cliffhanger. Aaaahhhh! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Fascinating man, riveting book.

Malcolm X has given African Americans pride, and a conviction that black people can lift themselves. Most of his life he advocated a "militant" separatist agenda, only embracing inclusiveness at the end of his life.
He has a colorful past life as a criminal, and prison is where he gets his education, from books. He changes his life - and the world.
"The most electrifying person I have met" - Alex Haley ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Gezemice #dangeroustype #rockinmay He certainly scared the hell out of white people #litsyatoz #gezeAZ #letterX (edited) 7y

Hag-Seed | Margaret Atwood

Mehso-so

Margaret Atwood wrote a Tempest fanfiction.

I greatly enjoyed the staging of The Tempest within a prison, the in-depth discussion and analysis. The swearing in Sheakespearian was brilliant, like the writing itself, as always.

I did not like, however, the forcing of The Tempest's story onto the overall story. I found The Tempest's plot convoluted to begin with.

I love you Margaret - but you were fangirling too hard with this one.

DivineDiana I found it very entertaining! Lots of humor! 7y
Gezemice @DivineDiana Atwood is extremely witty. I love her. I really enjoyed the Sheakspearian insults. But I felt that following the Tempest plot so closely was not a good move. 7y

The Blind Assassin: A Novel | Margaret Atwood

I am in awe of this book. The writing, the story, the imagination. The words. The way she interweaves stories. The fantasy mixed with a hard boiled egg. The way what's unsaid is the real story.

I have finished it two days ago but can't bring myself to write a review. How do you review something so stunning in 450 characters? I think I will post quotes.

mllemay I love this book! 7y
LeahBergen I loved it, too. ❤ 7y

Bibliogeekery Loved this book! 7y
Gezemice @Sweettartlaura I had the same feeling - I loved the writing from the beginning, but it was slow and I was wondering where it was going. Then it clicked and I was mesmerized. 7y

Men Explain Things to Me | Rebecca Solnit

Pickpick

This is a fundamental reading in contemporary feminism. The first two essays about the silencing of and violence against women are particularly powerful. I enjoyed the observation that marriage equality challenges gender stereotypes in heterosexual marriages; and that once an idea is out of the box, you can't put it back. Thought-provoking, but sometimes just provoking and lacking in solutions. ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I enjoyed this one too when I read it last year! Funny I was just finishing up a different book the same author! 7y
Gezemice Well you said I should read this. 😁 And you were right! 7y
