whimsy I guess he was born there but given that he left the country at an early age, he doesn't seem to identify as such? I'd say he's tons more British than Chinese. 6y

whimsy @MrBook Got it, that was indeed a qualifier. I'm so sorry if I'm dragging this, but if the intent of the list is compiling authors associated with China (regardless if they were born or raised there) than say the cultural output of China, it's a bit problematic to use this to present China's strong literary tradition. 6y
MrBook @whimsy No need to apologize, I love a good discussion about literature ☺️🤗. I appreciate it. A good chunk of these authors have spent a majority of their lives outside of China, true. Same excellent point was made regarding J. M. Coetzee and his affinities with South Africa and Australia. Things can blur a bit. As is also the case with Katherine. One of my other lists--can't remember, sorry, lol--has an author who only lived in the particular... (edited) 6y
MrBook country for a couple years before he died, but he lived there. Birth and death places are an interesting topic ?, as is one's "hometown". I was born outside of NYC and moved somewhat close to Pittsburgh when I was 10. I consider myself having two "hometown" cities ?. Anyway, I definitely see where you're coming from and understand your point, which is why I have the spread I do. It's only a very brief introductory list too ????. Ty ???! (edited) 6y
