Death of Kings: A Novel | Bernard Cornwell

Pickpick

Good old Uhtred, he never lets me down!
These past few years I've got into the habit of spending some time in his company over the winter solstice. This year he had to return early, his presence being requested elsewhere.

In this outing, England teeters between becoming a Christian Saxon kingdom and a pagan Danish one: Uhtred is instrumental in determining which. (As if his monstrous ego were not sufficiently inflated already, God love him! 🤣)

TrishB These are fun, entertaining reads definitely. 4mo

@Cuilin @dabbe Here are my selections for January's and February's #bookedintime themes.

January brings me a different Bernard Cornwell series, this time featuring Uhtred of Bebbanberg and Alfred the Great.

February isn't technically the 1917 revolution but the reign of Nicholas and Alexandra and the events leading up to it.

Cuilin Both work fabulously 👍 5mo
dabbe I got the January title on the spreadsheet; what's the exact February title and author? 🤩 5mo

I love Jonathan Keeble, but even his narration cannot save Bernard Cornwell's writing for me. I am so bored by this story. I keep giving Cornwell a try because I'm fascinated by the time periods he writes about, but I'm disappointed almost every time. He's just not for me.

AlaMich I read one of his books eons ago. I really liked his writing style, but I thought the battles were boring and there were soooo many battles. (edited) 9mo
DGRachel @AlaMich I‘ve read his Arthurian trilogy - loved the first one, second was ok, and I was disappointed by the third. He went off the rails with Agincourt. Gallows Hill wasn‘t bad, but his writing style just isn‘t my favorite. I‘m not sure why. It just feels like such a slog to get through. And I‘m probably just holding a grudge over Agincourt. 😂😂 9mo
AlaMich @DGRachel I read The Archer‘s Tale. I know his Sharpe series is super popular but I have a hunch it‘s just more battle scenes, only in a different era. 9mo
DGRachel @AlaMich Ugh. The Archer‘s Tale description screams “I would love this” and this is how he keeps sucking me in. 😭😭 I forgot he wrote the Sharpe books. I wanted to try those, too, but yes - all the battles. But I love those. 9mo

🎧 Jonathan Keeble raises the rating a full star! Fantastic!

This is an entertaining historical fiction based on Bernard Cornwall‘s actual family living in England during the 9th/10th centuries.

The story is told by Uhtred, a nobleman taken by Vikings as a child. He has no love for his King Albert & by the time he returns he‘s more Danish than English. The author knows how to stage a battle.

I bet this is an even better visual!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was definitely my favorite so far in the series. I‘m pleased to have Sitrich and Finan in the story finally.

Having been a fan of the show, I must say in reading about the taking down of Kjarten and his son, Sven was much more brutal in the book! I loved it!!! Nothing beats a good revenge story and they did it proper!

These books do differ from the show in many spots but I love them both separately so it all works for me.

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟the fluidity of the writing makes these books incredibly immersive. We fall in love with both sides of this bitter war between Saxon and Danes.

I picked up book # 1 of the series after watching the entire series on Netflix with my husband. We found this series during our stay at home phase of the pandemic. We always sat at the edge of our seats watching every episode. So here is book number 1 of 7. Can‘t wait to start!
