Victoria Holt one of the best authors of atmospheric writing; love her romances!
So, I am finally participating in #winterreadathon! I have been in a reading slump, mainly due to overload at work. This is the first book I finished since the second week of November.
I loved Victoria Holt as a teenager and maybe teenage angst is required. The book was slow and I didn‘t necessarily understand the motivations of the characters. The gothic sense wasn‘t really there either. Just a so-so for me.
. My grandma would give me books from Readers Digest condensed books, or cut from magazines. This was a favorite. And on my mind because of reading A Christmas Promise. I can agree it is a formulaic gothic romance, but I still love it so much ❤️ I‘m glad it was my date for New Years Day.
"Whoever disturbs the sleep of the kings will die" . . .
Atlast I've completed it y'all...
Trust me it's one of the best books I've read.
With hella mystery and tragedy and pieces of romace..

Are you @#$% kidding me??? The 'heroine' LITERALLY MARRIES HER NEAR-RAPIST BECAUSE THEY 'CHALLENGE' EACH OTHER.
What. In the actual. Fuck. This was written in 1983, y'all. Not 1953. Come. On.
Even if it were written in 1953, it would make me throw up in my mouth. No, thank you.
Lovely Gothic romantic suspense, in the vein of Mary Stewart or Elizabeth Peters writing as Barbara Michaels. So delicious on a cold afternoon with a cuppa.
