Silent Spring | Rachel Carson

#NewYearNewBooks #WomenInScience I still think first of Rachel Carson , marine biologist, who‘s classic work was often the average persons first look at the facts about environmental degradation related to chemicals, & other human activities.

4 ⭐ This book is about a real event, the oil spill in Santa Barbara in the 1970s. However, the characters are just that, characters that help move the story along. The senator is real, but the little girl at the heart of the story is not. Either way this book does a great job of showing why Earth Day was created and why it is still needed.

The Lorax | Dr. Seuss

This would be a great book to read to children when talking about the environment. We need to make sure we take care of the Earth because we only have one of them and once it is gone it is gone.

The Lorax by Dr. Seuss is a picture book that was published in 1971. The main message of The Lorax is that everyone has a responsibility to protect the ecosystem. Dr. Seuss presents the Once-ler, a rash Thneed businessman whose unbridled desire causes the nearby surroundings to be destroyed. It illustrates the distinction between a dead and a living planet. Up until the trees are gone and everything is gloomy, they utilize vibrant colors.

The Ghost Club (not in the database so I had to pick another book by the author) is an audio only book about London's ghost club whose members included Dickens, Doyle, and Yeats. Stories of ghosts and premonitions ahoy!

I loved the illustrations in this book about limiting plastic use to save our oceans. Kids who live near beaches can relate to the MC Isley (I 💕 her name, too). Did you know that sea turtles love jellies? Plastic bags look just like jellyfish. This book leaves kids inspired to make a difference. I think it would be interesting for kids who don't live near the beach to research how their plastic could end up in the ocean. Because it does.

This one has been sitting on my TBR for way too long (2008, maybe?!)
A few months ago at a meeting with Paolo Giordano, one of my favorite authors, he spoke mainly about this book (he wrote the foreword of the new italian edition).. so I decided to finally read it!

A classic environmental read. A book that documents the effects of pesticides on the environment. A book that shines light on disinformation put out by the chemical industry. The book that assisted in the banning of DDT and helped bring the environmental movement about.

KathyWheeler I‘m in a weird Mitford sisters/Rachel Carson place right now. I‘m currently reading Under the Sea Wind and will probably read Silent Spring next. 12mo
Jenken1998 @KathyWheeler I hear you. I get into moods. I spent most of April reading all eco fiction, environmental fiction and non fiction books.
