Sick: A Memoir | Porochista Khakpour

Pickpick

This is Porochista‘s journey to a Lyme Disease diagnosis. The book is sectioned into the many moves she‘s made - LA, NYC, Baltimore, rural PA, Leipzig, and Santa Fe. But she also discusses how her relationships with her parents and various men have invalided or helped her illness. And of course she talks about the (familiar to us with chronic illness) bouncing among doctors and healers and the incumbent frustrations. Definitely recommend! ⬇️

Megabooks This would work for #iran #readingasia as the author was born there and lived there in childhood until immigrating to the US. I didn‘t mention in the main review, but her Iranian identity is a major theme in the book as well. @BarbaraBB @Librarybelle 3y

BarbaraBB This sounds very interesting. Such a nasty disease. 3y
kaysworld1 Hey hun can you tag me in the post of the #newyearwhodis im going book shopping today see if I can pick any up i can get on audio xxx 3y
Crazeedi Lyme is such an insidious disease too. Sometimes you dont even realize what the Dx is till too late. I have 2 friends, one permanently disabled-he lost hearing, balance and many problems, the other had to undergo infusions of antibiotics for months. And he wasnt dx even after the standard tests, which many times arent sufficient. 3y
Megabooks @kaysworld1 done 👍🏻 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen yes! 👍🏻👍🏻 3y
Megabooks @Librarybelle thanks! 😃 3y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB it was! And yes, very bad. 3y
Megabooks @Crazeedi I am so sorry about your friends. It truly is terrible, especially in PA. The author had to pay out of pocket for a $2500 Lyme test to get diagnosed and she also had to undergo infusions and take over 100 pills a day for awhile when her disease was active. I don‘t understand why they can‘t make an affordable human test for Lyme when we have one for pets. We also have a Lyme vaccine for dogs. 3y
Megabooks @Crazeedi the book was supposed to be a woman‘s triumphant return to health, and while she did get healthy after her deep treatment in Santa Fe, she then traveled extensively to promote a book and was in a car accident that reactivated her Lyme. Truly insidious! 3y
Crazeedi @Megabooks you said exactly what we have talked about endlessly, there are vaccines for other diseases, and how many billions given to pharma for covid. And how many hundreds of thousands of people have been devastated by lyme. I guess the financial incentive isnt there? Its disgusting. My husband had lyme twice now, fortunately we realized early and was treated quickly. 3y
Megabooks @Crazeedi I could go on and on (seriously) about why pharma and research dollars go where they go. But all I will say is the most profitable thing a drug company can develop is a pill you take every day (cholesterol meds, antidepressants, pain killers) and convince doctors to prescribe it to a whole lot of people. Vaccines, antibiotics, etc. aren‘t good for the bottom line because they cost a lot to develop and may never be profitable. ⬇️ 3y
Megabooks The Covid vaccine got fast tracked because a whole lot of people in and whole lot of places have died in a short period of time, but there are diseases who have killed as many if not more people over a longer period of time that may never have a vaccine or clear treatment protocol. (edited) 3y
Crazeedi @Megabooks you've said it better than I ever could. 100% exactly correct. It disgusts me 3y

A memoir about chronic illness while I‘m going through an active phase of my chronic illness? I think so. We‘ll see if this works for me. #bookmail

I also got some new floating shelves in the mail...wonder why I need them...🤔😂

WorldsOkayestStepMom Chronic illnesses suck. I'm dealing with a massive pain flare too. 3y
Megabooks @WorldsOkayestStepMom I am so sorry! They do suck. My thoracic outlet syndrome is all flared up. 3y

Megabooks @JennyM thanks, Jenny! 💜💜 3y
Reviewsbylola I‘ll have to stack this. I‘ve realized recently that I just tend to ignore my own chronic illness, especially the hand it plays in my anxiety and mental health. 3y
Megabooks @Reviewsbylola yes, so far she‘s covering a lot of important bases from stress in childhood to the role that adult vices play to the struggle to get doctors to understand/believe. I‘m finding it very relatable. I‘d also be remiss not to mention this excellent book, which really helped me understand my pain and also the role being a woman plays in chronic illness. 3y
Megabooks @Reviewsbylola and also, I‘m sorry you have health problems too. It sucks it just f***ing sucks! 3y
Cinfhen This sounds like it could be helpful, Meg 💓💓💓sorry that you‘re all dealing with chronic pain @WorldsOkayestStepMom @Reviewsbylola 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen thanks Cindy. 🥰🥰 I used to avoid pain memoirs but I‘m finding them more helpful than I used to. 3y
Reviewsbylola Mine doesn‘t involve pain, luckily. Just a lot of other funky symptoms. @cinfhen. It‘s Graves Disease, with my thyroid, and I‘ve struggled with it basically my whole life. I usually just ignore it but it‘s gotten to a point where I really have to examine the issues it‘s caused and try taking a different approach, I think. 3y
Reviewsbylola Thanks for the rec Meg! 3y
Cinfhen I know we‘ve discussed your chronic illness before @Reviewsbylola I‘m happy to hear you‘re thinking of dealing with it instead of ignoring it 😘 3y
Cinfhen Sometimes knowledge really is power, Meg. Although you are definitely an informed patient 💜 3y
Megabooks @Reviewsbylola it is so hard to do the right thing for your body sometimes because many times it is difficult to make life adjustments, etc. for whatever reason. Sending support! 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen yes, that‘s part of the reason I‘m happy to have so much medical knowledge! The author has CDC reported Lyme Disease plus multiple problems from car accidents. I‘ve always suspected I may have had erlichosis (another tick borne disease) based on a tick I missed for awhile and speciated based on my location and the tick‘s morphology. 🤷🏻‍♀️ when I became symptomatic, I got my doctor to call in the appropriate course of doxycycline, ⬇️ 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen but maybe it‘s stuck around. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ I probably know more about tick-borne illness than 95% of human doctors. Very well covered in vet school. 3y
Cinfhen You‘re like Dr. House ....I think you can diagnosis the hell out of most medical mysteries 3y
Reviewsbylola I think the hardest part for me is understanding how my anxiety ties into my Graves Disease and how to keep that balance between the two to mitigate symptoms on both fronts. 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen as far as parasites, yes! I always do well with those episodes. I‘m pretty good with tumors and odd symptoms too. But otherwise, no. Plus, I‘m nicer! 😉😃 3y
Megabooks @Reviewsbylola yes, the thyroid can be sneaky when it comes to moods. I think we‘re still discovering a lot about the endocrine system and how it effects other aspects of health, especially in women whose other hormones can fluctuate during the month and through pregnancy. Women are still deeply underrepresented in many, many health studies. 3y
britt_brooke Hope you‘re feeling ok, sweet friend! 3y
Megabooks @britt_brooke thanks Britt! I‘m doing better than I was last week, so that‘s good. 💜 3y

A book club read. I found this to be told and written well. Sometimes a story makes you grateful for the life you have. This is one of those times. Sadly many of these stories about health issues don't have a tidy ending, because the issues are ongoing. Also sad are how many ways the health care system can fail you. I look forward to chatting about this one in book club.

he first 80% of the book is Porochita‘s life in her teenage years until her thirties. She dates, drinks, and does a lot of drugs. She doesn‘t ever feel quite right. She‘s always sick. A doctor mentions Lyme disease but she never pursued it. It goes from her being sick to better multiple times. Finally, she meets some friends that insist she needed to get help. The last 40 pages were 5 star for me, you just have to get there. 4/5.
