Starting this as my expendable travel read - I intend on leaving it on the plane or in the hotel. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Found on ky shelves, unknown when originally acquired, it fits a reading challenge I do every year: #WiaN #WhatsinaName #WiaN2024 category NFL Team (the subtitle features CHIEF Inspector Gamache! 🏈

I actually own this one and so it slipped in the pile some, it was finally time to read it. I was not disappointed and thoroughly enjoyed revisiting Three Pines and the wonderful characters in this series. I also love when real history is included in part of the story (in this case Dr. Cameron and his CIA funded human experiments at McGill). There are a lot of morality issues in this one and it would be a good choice for book clubs. 4.5/5

Chief Inspector Gamache, Agents Beauvoir and LaCoste, Clara, Peter, Ruth, Myrna, Gabri, and Olivier - I feel attached to the characters and Three Pines. In this one CC dePoitiers is murdered, and no one seemed to like her. Gamache is also working on a side case - to solve the murder of a homeless woman named Elle. Overall, very good read. ⬇️

Make a great day everyone 🙂

bthegood We also get the backstory of the Arnot case and why it is an issue for Gamache, and we are left with a bit of a cliffhanger as Gamache's superiors try to “take him down“.

Susanita @dabbe This is one of the few that would work as a standalone. If you want the whole series start with 3w
dabbe @Susanita I read A FATAL GRACE over the holidays and realized it wasn't the 1st in the series. I LOVED it and have it tagged as a series I want to read more. I love Inspector Gamache and Three Pines! 🤩 3w

(2009) Fourth in Penny's series featuring Quebec detective Armand Gamache. In this one, Gamache investigates murder at a forest resort where he & Mme Gamache celebrate their anniversary. Penny's mysteries strike me not so much as mysteries but as stories about being human that just happen to involve murder. This one is about families and how they feed and fail us. It made me squirm repeatedly.

This was my #BookSpin read for March

bthegood Starting this series this month - sounds interesting - 🙂 1mo
rretzler It‘s a great series! 1mo
CarolynM I think you are right about the nature of Louise Penny‘s stories. The mystery isn‘t the important bit. 1mo

These are my go-to re-reads when I can‘t concentrate on anything else. Considering a complete re-read of the series now that I know another one is coming this fall.

Suzze I have an advance copy of the new one. I am about 1/4 into it, and love it, as always! 2mo
Bookwormjillk @Suzze good to hear! 2mo
Aimeesue Three Pines is such a great escape, even if it is a bit murder-y. 2mo

Another excellent Inspecteur Gamache mystery: set in Three Pines and exploring a painful family tragedy, with background narratives of both a flooding of the St. Lawrence river and internal conflict within the police force.
