East of Eden | John Steinbeck

Pickpick

I‘m not sure why I was so *afraid* of reading Steinbeck - turns out, he‘s great at writing literary smut. This was a real page turner with plenty to think about and a cast of really unforgettable characters. I enjoyed my time with the evil Cathy and wise benevolent Lee. Can‘t wait to wrap up our final discussion next Friday!! Thank you to all the buddy readers who really helped elevate this book with their insights and comments. #EoE

erzascarletbookgasm Lovely review! I‘m so glad you organised this read along, otherwise this would still be sitting on my tbr. I was initially intimidated by the volume but it‘s so readable and engaging. Many things to ruminate too :) 5y
batsy Haha, yes! I'm not sure what I was afraid of, either. Nice review! Thank you for organising the readalong; I'm so glad I read it. 5y
Cinfhen I‘m so glad you both joined me! I fear this book would never have been read without the buddyread @batsy @erzascarletbookgasm so what should we tackle next ?!!???! 5y

erzascarletbookgasm Let‘s do a voting based on a few suggestions? 5y
mrp27 Thanks for hosting. Both book and discussions have been outstanding!! I've read Steinbeck before but this book elevated him in my eyes. 5y
Cinfhen I‘ve been loving the discussions!! This book really lends itself for book-talk @mrp27 5y
Cinfhen If you have any thoughts about an “older” book that seems daunting I‘d love to hear @erzascarletbookgasm 5y
rubyslippersreads @batsy @erzascarletbookgasm I never would have read this without a buddy read either. Thanks so much for organizing, @Cinfhen 😊 I‘ll be thinking about daunting older books for a future read. 5y
batsy @Cinfhen Just a suggestion Cindy but one author that's definitely on my #HelpMeImScared list is Faulkner. Both Sound and Fury and Absalom, Absalom on my TBR. 5y
batsy Or Grapes of Wrath :) 5y
erzascarletbookgasm I haven‘t read any Faulkner either. I was also thinking of EM Forster (A Room with a View, A Passage to India) or The Colour Purple or Beloved or The Heart of Darkness. Maybe they‘re not that daunting but I‘ve always meant to read them and I‘m guessing they‘re lots to discuss too? @Cinfhen 5y
Cinfhen I haven‘t read any of the books mentioned @batsy @erzascarletbookgasm and honestly I‘m a little scared too 🙊 let me research them and see if any call to me 😉♥️ 5y
sisilia Absalom, Absalom has been on my list, too @batsy 5y
Kalalalatja The discussions have really made the experience so much better! I‘m so happy you liked the book 🙌 5y
Cinfhen I‘m not ready for Absalom, Absalom @batsy @sisilia @erzascarletbookgasm and EM Forster scares me too!! I might be up for The Color Purple 5y
UwannaPublishme I fear any and all chunksters 😱 so thank you @Cinfhen for organizing this #buddyread. It made the ride thru 600-plus pages much more fun. Your creative questions spurred some deep discussions that made this classic very memorable for me. And what a great group of buddyreaders! I second the motion for Grapes of Wrath. 👍🏻 5y
DebinHawaii I wanted to finish but I got into other books including a review so maybe tonight. I did end up liking so far much more than I thought I would and the #buddyread & discussions have really enhanced the experience. I never would have read it on my own, so thank you! 🤗😘 5y
batsy @erzascarletbookgasm I've read Howards End and Passage to India and loved it; Forster's writing is beautiful. I've never read Heart of Darkness, Colour Purple, or Beloved either and want to, so those are great suggestions. 5y
Cinfhen I fear chunksters too @UwannaPublishme especially if they are considered a “classic” but breaking this book down by parts and reading with a group made the entire experience delightful and engaging xx Thanks so much for joining me @DebinHawaii @Kalalalatja It was really fun ❤️ 5y
jenniferw88 @Cinfhen EM Forster is very readable, as is Morrison. Heart of Darkness is a slog, but it is odd! 5y
Blaire @jenniferw88 @cinfhen @batsy @erzascarletbookgasm I agree with others here that Forster is very readable. Loved “a room with a view” and “Howard‘s end.” The stories really flow. 5y
