Read this book in 2 days. I didn't realise that it is a true story about the Black Saturday bush fires and the young man convicted of lighting them. A page turner in a different way. Reminded me of some of Helen Garner's books. @MrsMalaprop @Rissreads thanks for your reviews.

Thanks @Rissreads
I‘d been trying to get hold of this book after reading Hooper‘s Bedtime Story recently.
It tells the story of Australia‘s horrific Black Saturday fires in Victoria in Feb 2009 (incidentally when I was about to pop - my son was born on 28 Feb 2009). I had heard this was a fast-paced thriller. It certainly hooked me in and I appreciated the thorough examination of both sides. A devastating tale with absolutely no winners 😢.

Rissreads Yes fantastic book! 👏🏻 8mo

This book was so distressing! It‘s so well written and researched. Hooper handles everyone involved such as the victims, firefighters, police and the arsonist himself, with such respect. The devastation to the environment and the animals is heart breaking! It‘s a sad story all round for every single person. I think I will be thinking of this for quiet awhile.

MrsMalaprop Is it your copy? Would love to borrow it when we next catch up 🙏. 8mo
Rissreads @MrsMalaprop yep! Will bring it Saturday night x 8mo

This book was written a long time ago and l find the premise of art and love intriguing. This book was long winded in places but the focus on the art and collections of woman artists in Australia at the turn of th century was interesting. Anne's focus was all over the place and l think it ended up wanting to be a different book all together. A lot of art history here.

It took me years to get my hands on this book and it was worth the wait. It‘s terrific narrative nonfiction, detailing the story of a fire deliberately set and those impacted by it, then the investigation and trial. Hooper is more convinced of the outcome than I—this book reveals how much nuance there is in our ideas of criminality. I would love to read more of her work.

LeeRHarry The Tall Man by this author is fantastic - highly recommend. I bawled my way through parts of the tagged book 😔 (edited) 3y
Cinfhen LOVED this book!!! And now I remember @LeeRHarry recommended I read this one 👉🏽 going to search RIGHT NOW!! 3y

This audio was SO GOOD❣️😭😭😭
The Black Saturday Bush Fires were horrific in nature and destruction and yet I‘m not sure if justice was really served. This story is heartbreaking for all involved; victims, attorneys, family, detectives, and perpetrator. Chloe Hooper has written a beautiful, fully detailed account of that devastating day ~ Saturday, February 7, 2009. Highly recommend
👇🏼

squirrelbrain Sounds great - stacked! 3y
squirrelbrain Oh dear, I appear to have bought a copy! I thought my hubby might like it as he loved this one recently. (edited) 3y

LeeRHarry I bawled my eyes out in this one - that day is still so vivid in my memory, so awful, the eerie sunrises and the ever presence of smoke in the city for days and the trauma of all the loss. Chloe Hooper did a great job. 3y
Cinfhen I bought the book too @squirrelbrain but I‘m glad I found the audio on #Scribd 🙌🏻and I totally forgot about your tagged book. Thanks for the reminder. Into my #TBRnotebook it goes😄 3y
Cinfhen I can‘t even begin to imagine what that most have been like @LeeRHarry I sobbed a few times while reading this book....so heartbreaking 💔😭😭😭 3y
LeeRHarry @Cinfhen one of my colleagues lost friends who were housesitting in Kinglake at the time, so many truly sad stories. Her other non fiction book is excellent too - I‘m forever spruiking that one on Litsy! (edited) 3y
Cinfhen I just went searching for that book @LeeRHarry and #scribd has it!!! I‘ll definitely be reading it. 3y
squirrelbrain That one sounds great too @LeeRHarry - stacked. 3y
Lizpixie I‘m so happy it was a hit for you too. Bushfire season is always a devestating time here in Australia with naturally occurring fires (usually lightning strikes)but it seems so much worse when they‘re deliberately lit. A sad story for all involved🔥💔 (edited) 3y
Hooked_on_books This has been on my TBR for a while, but I haven‘t been able to get an audio copy of it. Libro.fm has it, but it‘s locked in the US. I look forward to finally reading it whenever I can track it down. 3y
Cinfhen It was a #kindledeal a few months back @Hooked_on_books if I come across it again I‘ll tag u. I listened via #scribd / I‘m sure it‘s just as good in print but there is something soothing about an Australian accent 💜 3y
Cinfhen I remember when u first posted about this book @Lizpixie those images really stayed with me 💔 3y
Cinfhen Would this book be too upsetting for your dad @Centique ??Because as a reader of NF it‘s really beautifully written/ full of factual information but told with tremendous compassion 3y
Hooked_on_books I definitely love an Aussie accent! 😍 3y
Centique @Cinfhen I was thinking that this would be a good one for him too! Does it dwell on any children suffering? He will struggle if it does. Hard to cover this subject without being upsetting though. I will definitely read it. 3y
Cinfhen No, @Centique but it does discuss the taunting and bullying that the perpetrator faced during his childhood and into adulthood 😢💔The book is REALLY EXCELLENT 3y
Centique @Cinfhen we will try it then! 😘 3y
Cinfhen Ohhh, im excited to hear what dad thinks 😁although I need to prepare myself in case he thinks it‘s rubbish 😂😂😂 @Centique (edited) 3y
Centique @Cinfhen 😂😂 you just never know! 3y
Reviewsbylola How does it compare to another great arsonist, Tonya? 😬😂 3y
Cinfhen I thought this book was BETTER than crazy T @Reviewsbylola I genuinely felt for the arsonist 😔try the audio, soothing Aussie accent 3y

I recommend The Arsonist to true crime fans who worry that they‘re completely numb after endless accounts of grisly serial murders. And, of course, I recommend it to all Australians who remember the Black Saturday fires – but only if you think you can stomach it. (Seriously, trigger warning for fire and general horror!)
