I adore good narrative nonfiction, so picking only 3 is very difficult! So I‘m going to cheat. 😀

1. Tagged
2. “And the Band Played On”
3. “My Own Country: A Doctor‘s Story”
4. “The Worst Hard Time: The Untold Story of Those Who Survived the Great American Dust Bowl”
5. “Eleni”

@dabbe #ThreeListThursday

TheBookHippie Oh #2 for sure!!! 3w
AmyG #2 is a great book! Forgot about that one. 3w
dabbe Whew! You gave me some great ones to look into! Thanks for sharing! 💚💙💚 3w

Amiable @monalyisha I could have kept going! 😀 3w
monalyisha @Amiable Oh, I know. I‘m still tempted to just make another one. 🙈 3w

Assassination Vacation | Sarah Vowell

Pickpick

REREAD: Sarah Vowell is a Gen X historian with a Gen X wit, which is to say this book is a dark, wisecracking comedic take on U.S. history. While Vowell very much shows her personal interest in the Lincoln assassination, she also reminds us that Garfield and McKinley were assassinated as well, you know. And one of the assassins even had ties to a 19th Century biblical sex cult-turned-kitchenwares company. But we already knew that. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Librarybelle This one is my favorite by her! 1mo
Awk_Word_Smith @Librarybelle Amen! It was definitely the most Gen X snarky. And as a Gen Xer, I hardily approve. 1mo
Librarybelle I‘m one of those “millennials” that just missed the Gen X cutoff and better identify with the X‘ers than the millennials. Give me snarkiness any day! 😂 1mo
Awk_Word_Smith @Librarybelle honorary Gen X 🙌 1mo

Highly recommend. I love the narrative writing and I learned so much about Garfield and medical science.

Crazeedi I've had the book on my shelf forever! I need to move it up! 1mo

This was one of my favorite books of '22. Apple has had a fairly good record recently with adaptations, so I'm hopeful with their upcoming adaptation:

LeahBergen How exciting! I loved this book. 2mo
vivastory @LeahBergen If I recall correctly, there is a follow-up to this book. I need to look into it. 2mo
LeahBergen I haven‘t read it either. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2mo

TieDyeDude Interesting. I hadn't heard of the adaption, but this is a very good book! 2mo
peaKnit Ooh adaptation!? I enjoyed this book also! 2mo
Aimeesue Living so near DC, we‘ve been to Ford‘s Theater for the tour, which was very moving. And the nearby Library of Congress has the objects that were in Lincoln‘s pockets that night. https://www.loc.gov/item/myloc16/ 2mo
Reggie Wasn‘t there a doctor whose barn the guy hid out in? And so they prosecuted that doctor, and they just exonerated him back in the 90s because his family kept up the fight for over a century saying he had nothing to do with the assassination? 2mo

This was a re-read for me, prompted by its inclusion on the #AuldLangSpine list I got from @Amiable. I couldn‘t quite get it finished in January! When I read this the first time, even though I knew what would happen, I found myself hoping things would turn out differently on that Memphis balcony. I felt the same again. This is one of the best nonfiction books I‘ve ever read.⬇️

MallenNC Side note: I‘ve visited the Lorraine Motel, which is now a civil rights museum and highly recommend it. The room is just as Dr. King left it, which is very moving. 2mo
Amiable Such an amazing read! I‘m still thinking about it several months later. 2mo

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 Background of James Earl Ray leading up to Martin Luther King‘s assassination and the hunt for him in the weeks after. I hadn‘t thought much about him one way or the other, but this was a really interesting read. I hadn‘t heard of this until seeing @Amiable post about it the other day.

Amiable It‘s so good, right? So glad you enjoyed it as much as I did! 3mo
fredthemoose @Amiable it was really good! I whipped right through it! 3mo
Amiable I honestly never knew about the whole manhunt. I knew that James Earl Ray had assassinated MLK, but I don‘t think we ever learned in school about what happened afterward and how the FBI even figured out who he was, much less where to find him. Utterly fascinating! This is going to be my favorite read of 2023, hands down. 3mo

CrowCAH @Andrew65 you‘re welcome ☺️ I like how your readathons are choose your own goal; everyone is a winner! 4mo
Andrew65 @CrowCAH I think this flexibility helps people tailor it to their own life circumstances and feel that they have a chance of being successful. Some readathons just set me and others up to failure. 4mo

For my NONFICTION brackets: October‘s pick was a superstar. This was what narrative nonfiction should be —an engrossing, well-researched, well-written book that reads like a thriller. It‘s going to be very difficult to top this book as Best of 2024.

CSeydel He‘s great! I loved 5mo
Amiable @CSeydel Me too! I just picked this one up from the library today (edited) 5mo

Fantastic account of the manhunt for James Earl Ray after the assassination of MLK Jr. in 1968. I am very particular about awarding stars —this one gets all 5 of them. Sides creates a tension as Ray circles and stalks MLK, and then details the meticulous work done by the FBI to track him down. This is what narrative nonfiction should be. And it also completes my #Nonfiction2023 bingo card. Thanks for a great year, @Riveted_Reader_Melissa !

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Sounds very good 5mo
AnnR Impressive and some good nonfiction books in the mix. 👏🎉👍Something I need to try and read more of next year. 5mo
Singout Way to go, Amiable! Don‘t know if I‘ll get that one done this year! 5mo

Amiable @AnnR Every year @Riveted_Reader_Melissa creates an awesome bingo card with some great categories for nonfiction! It‘s fun trying to match books to the topics. 5mo
Amiable @Singout It took me longer this year —I had to ponder a couple of categories to come up with a relevant book. 😀 5mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Amiable I‘m already planning next year‘s, hopefully it will be equally thought provoking but easier. 5mo
Singout @amiable Yes, I‘m being creative! 5mo
