Romeo & Juliet | William Shakespeare
post image

Dear Purists: Please be kind.

I really liked this adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, set in the suburb of Verona Beach. I love the dissonance between the modern characters, props, and setting and the Shakespearean English dialogue of the original play. It made for a surreal and beautiful experience that played well to my literary and artistic senses.

Pogue This was one of my favorite adaptations. It shows how the story is essentially about gangs and their fights, not about Romance. 9mo
Cinfhen And the soundtrack was fantastic 🤟🏼 9mo
Brooke_H And Harold Parrineau is so good as Mercurio! 9mo

KathyWheeler I loved this version. 9mo
madamereadsalot1 I adore this version! 9mo
Clare-Dragonfly As a snobby teenager, I hated this version. But I‘ve seen it many times since and love it now. My teacher friend says that it‘s the most faithful adaptation, line for line, of the play. 9mo
BookishTrish I lived this movie. Have you heard Claire Danes read The Handmaid‘s Tale? 9mo
Soubhiville I love this movie too! I can‘t say how many times I‘ve watched it. 💔❤️ 9mo
PaperbackPirate Another fan of the movie & soundtrack! I don‘t think you need to apologize. 9mo
TheKidUpstairs I LOVE this movie. And as @PaperbackPirate said, it's got a great soundtrack! 9mo
TheKidUpstairs @Pogue yes! I hate when people hold this up as the ultimate love story/romance. It's a bloody tragedy!!! 9mo
TheKidUpstairs @Brooke_H he was perfection in that role. 9mo
ravenlee I was ambivalent about this movie when it came out but I wore out the soundtrack (on cassette!). 9mo
Centique I loved this movie too! Baz Luhrmann has a unique touch. Have you seen Strictly Ballroom? It‘s over the top but also sweet and fabulous. 😍 9mo
LiterRohde @Centique I have not. 9mo
LiterRohde @PaperbackPirate Thank you for the support! I didn‘t expect too much pushback from Littens, so the comment was a bit tongue in cheek, but some people are so adamant about not messing with the “original”. 9mo
LiterRohde @BookishTrish I have not. But I can see how she would be a good choice as narrator. 9mo
PaperbackPirate @LiterRohde I think it shows the quality of the story if it‘s still relevant today, so if there is a grump tell them to take it as a compliment! 😁 9mo
