Quirkybookworm It wasn't just a poem, it was sung also. 6y
jb72 @Quirkybookworm that‘s cool. It seems like the Scotts like to sing a lot of poems and tales. 6y

Prompt: Scottish

Found this lovely little poem on the Scottish Poetry Library website. Sorry to say the whole would not fit. Check out the whole poem at www.scottishpoetrylibrary.org/poetry/poems/robert-burns

I'm in Glasgow for a workshop and paid a visit to Rabbie Burns in St. George's Square. My first visit, and I didn't have time for a proper look around, but did manage to dive into a Waterstones for a few "souvenirs" ??

Leftcoastzen Love Mr.Burns! 6y
Bookwomble @Leftcoastzen I have to admit that other than knowing the phrase, "Wee, sleekit, cowrin, tim'rous beastie", and the name of the poem, "Cock Up Your Beaver" (juvenile snigger ? - Grow up, Bookwomble!), I don't really know Burns's work. 6y
Leftcoastzen I almost ran with the beastie line! Haven‘t read all his stuff but what I have tried, enjoyed. 6y

Headed to my first Robert Burns party tonight. I‘m taking a bottle of Balvenie and a copy of The First Fig by Edna St. Vincent Millay to read to the assembly. I‘ve also volunteered to be the kilt checker. I anticipate shenanigans.

No ceilidh or festive supper for me tonight but Happy Burns Night to all you lovely Scottish Littens out there. Sláinte Mhath! I‘ll be munching on neeps and tatties without the haggis (vegetarian here - sorry) and will snuggle up on the couch with my book.

I dug up some photos of Burns Nights past from when I was in college! #poetrychallenge2018

MiyakoBunny 🤦🏻‍♀️It‘s so wrong that the 1st thought I had 💭 was Oh Cool A Night in Tribute To Mr.Burns! I wonder if anyone dressed as Smithers? *smh*This is what a Simpson‘s Education has afforded me apparently lol 😂 6y
teebe @MiyakoBunny 😂I really hope that somewhere this is a thing, with Smithers being a mandatory part of it. 6y
MiyakoBunny @teebe Wouldn‘t that be glorious!?😳😍😍😍 6y
See All 6 Comments
Natasha.C.Barnes @teebe I'm sure there is an irreverent Scottish Simpsons fan out there who combines the two! And @MiyakoBunny I wouldn't worry about not having heard of it--I've probably had 2 people mention it to me ever, I'd never have known if it weren't for my grandfather. I love your interpretation though! 😂 6y
teebe @Natasha.C.Barnes maybe this should be your instead-of event 😂 still technically a Burns night. 6y

I have often thrown Burns Night parties as my grandparents once did (my grandfather is quite proud of his Scottish heritage) and wanted to post a few of his poems today for my #poetrychallenge2018 peeps, but of course this year we're getting to hear all about how much of a creep he was...🙄😤 https://www.theguardian.com/books/booksblog/2017/jan/25/burns-night-celebrates-t...

Natasha.C.Barnes P.S. Not my 📷, it's from the Book Riot article--very aspirational Burns celebration, I'll try to track down some of my photos today. 6y
booksandsympathy You cannot judge a historical person by today's standards. People try, but honestly, they'd have to judge everyone. 6y
teebe @booksandsympathy I love history but I‘ve always had trouble with this idea. A dictator‘s actions don‘t become morally grey because of changing times. A eugenicist is still racist no matter what decade you place them in. So why would we give other historical figures a pass for awful actions? So much of history focuses on how great individuals were, it‘s awesome that we‘re acknowledging these people weren‘t perfect and were often horrible. (edited) 6y

Natasha.C.Barnes @teebe I really appreciate you adding your take on this, I totally agree. Sometimes I'm able to totally cut a historical figure out of my life (of celebration or consumption) like Columbus, but other times it's harder to figure out what I think is right--but usually that's just me dragging my feet and mourning the loss of something I love. I could give a shit about Burns and his poetry, actually, but I love this event...⬇️ 6y
Natasha.C.Barnes @teebe ...so I'm going to have to think on what I want to do in the future. Maybe I can make something similar, but on a different night and celebrating something better that's Scottish... 6y
teebe Personally, I‘m all for liking the problematic things as long as we acknowledge that they‘re problematic. Obviously there‘s a limit bc people like Columbus are such extreme examples of As Horrible As Possible but it‘s near to impossible for anything to be unproblematic. ⬇️ 6y
teebe E.g., Friends is a terribly whitewashed show, with ableist/fat-shaming jokes & it ripped off a popular show by Black creators... I still love Friends because it was a huge part of my life but I‘ll be the first to critize the hell out of it and tell people to watch Living Single instead 🤷🏻‍♀️ (edited) 6y
teebe That idea is really good though, I‘m sure there‘s plenty of great Scottish things that are worth celebrating more— especially if it‘s not ultimately about Burns for you— and it‘d probably be fun to do research on that. 6y

There‘s a literary holiday called “Burns Night”?!?!? How did I not know about this? I feel like a failure as a Burns and a reader.

https://bookriot.com/?p=149624

CocoReads Yes, one of our pubs, Fiddler‘s Hearth has an annual dinner. I‘ve never gone, it‘s pretty pricey and I suck at making reservations but maybe one day! 6y

MrBook What is this? Check it out @BookBabe . Oooh! 😊👍🏻 7y
mrsmarch @MrBook The stew or the holiday, lol? Scottish chicken and barley and leek soup flavored with bay and thyme and garnished with prunes...surprisingly delicious. 7y
MrBook Oh, I know Burns Night. Every FreeMason knows about Bobby 😉👍🏻. The stew. Yep, @BookBabe would like this. (*whispers* She'll be asking for a recipe.) 7y
mrsmarch @MrBook well, Brother, I will go look for the link I used.... 7y
mrsmarch @MrBook http://eatathomecooks.com/2014/02/slow-cooker-chicken-cock-leekie-soup/ and the cheese is Mull of Kintyre, if you like cheddar. 7y

So much love for Robert Burns. This little book never leaves my desk. And it's his birthday! I just posted a video reading of "A Man's a Man for A' That" on my YouTube channel.

Should Old Acquaintance be forgot,
and never thought upon;
The flames of Love extinguished,
and fully past and gone:
Is thy sweet Heart now grown so cold,
that loving Breast of thine;
That thou canst never once reflect
On old long syne.

My love is like a red, red rose
That's newly sprung in June:
My love is like the melody
That's sweetly played in tune.
