Fables 1: Legends in Exile (Turtleback School & Library)
Fables 1: Legends in Exile (Turtleback School & Library) | Bill Willingham
77 posts | 141 read | 48 to read
When a savage creature known only as the Adversary conquered the fabled lands of legends and fairy tales, all of the infamous inhabitants of folklore were forced into exile. Disguised among the "mundys," their name for normal citizens of modern-day New York, these magical characters created their own secret society that they call Fabletown. From their exclusive luxury apartment buildings on Manhattan's Upper West Side, these creatures of legend must fight for their survival in the new world. "Fables "is the winner of 14 Eisner Awards and is one of the most enduring Vertigo titles ever. Here, in this new, 10th anniversary edition, is a newly colored 8-page story from the "Fables "prose work "Peter & Max" "A Fables Novel," as well as a beautiful new cover from series artist Mark Buckingham.

I bought this after I saw high praise for it from a few people but the cover initially turned me off so I put it on my shelf for a few years. However, I ended up enjoying it. All of our favorite fairy tale characters are in exile in New York, living hidden lives while they long to return to their magical lands. This first volume revolves around a crime.

Not as immediately nor as thoroughly hooked by this as I was by Saga but it is definitely intriguing. It reminded me a little of the TV series Once Upon A Time which I loved (back when I still watched TV.) The artwork is gritty and kinda retro looking (don't know a real lot about this genre.) The relationship between Snow White and the Wolf is one I'm keen to follow.

Sweetkokoro I got 3 volumes into Fables before I dropped it. It just got super long winded and boring for me, hopefully it keeps holding your attention. I liked the idea and premises of the story I just wish I was able to really get into it. 4mo
esurient @Sweetkokoro I bounced from this series a bit later than you. I found it incredibly inventive at the start, but I felt Willingham became too soap-boxy pushing his preferred characters and ideologies. 4mo
batsy I really enjoyed this series but left off after about 8 or 9 volumes; need to resume! 4mo

I enjoyed this volume collecting the first five issues. It is a very interesting concept and loved seeing how the fairytale characters were living in our world. I enjoyed the detective story and can't wait to see how this series plays out.

This was okay; just not for me. A lot of people would tell me to lighten up, but there were some small snags in the investigation that I just couldn't suspend my disbelief for.

I mean, I have no problem believing the premise of all these characters from fables finding themselves in our would, but the way they conducted a murder investigation was pretty silly. Again, it's just not for me.

Finished reading Vol.1 of Fables (issues 1-5) the other day. I‘m a sucker for fairytales and retellings, it‘s always a joy to read different takes on the classics. The first vol had a good opening tale and instantly captured me, from recognizing the fairytale characters to actually enjoying the detective story involved, definitely one I would recommend to others i can tell it‘s going to be enjoyable.

So I‘m participating in this passport to CT libraries. First stop at a library not my own and look what treasures I found!!! My own library has ZERO adult graphic novels; this one has a whole section! Definitely will be going back! #litsyloveslibraries

Captivatedbybooks Ooo i wonder if they do something like this in PA 1y
MoMogrl @CareBear how does this work? Have lived in CT my whole life and never heard of this.... 1y
mcipher They have lots at the Groton Public library (near work so i go there a lot)! But that‘s a hike for you. 😆 1y

CareBear @MoMogrl there‘s a list of participating libraries - each one you visit will stamp you and give you a little item. Lasts through April. Then they do a drawing for a $150 visa gift card! They also give a gift card to the person with the most stamps. 1y
CareBear @mcipher good to know! I travel for work a lot (and we are often down that way to play poker), so I‘ll have to stop in sometime! 1y

On recommendation from the local comic store, I picked up Fables Vol 1 & 2. Not bad story lines, the art is pretty good but not really a replacement for Saga. They are similar to Once Upon A Time but better. #2018christyread #hookedongraphics

This was an interesting graphic novel. Fairy tale characters are living in New York and keeping their true identities under wraps. There were some great characterizations and the story was good. I am not sure if I will continue this series, but I am glad I read this one.

So I read this once many years ago and retained almost all of it, which is surprising for my spotty memory. It's a really good introduction to a very interesting world, if a bit dry. There's a lot of talking for a comic book, particularly in the last issue. But the characters are interesting and it does keep you engaged. Definitely worth checking out.

I'm a big fan of fairy tale retellings when they're done well, and Fables is done well!

Issue 1 is obviously a lot of worldbuilding to set up the whole "fairy tale characters live in secret exile in modern NYC" thing but it put out plenty of interesting plot threads for the future issues to pick up while still having (and solving!) its own interesting mystery.

NataliePatalie I've been wanting to read this series! But there's so many of them it's a bit overwhelming lol. 3y

⭐️⭐️The artwork is the only reason I gave this two stars instead of one. I was not impressed with the story. Perhaps I'm too old & set in my ways. Seeing characters from fairytales swear & swindle is not my ideal. Others may enjoy the creative license & I respect that. In return, I hope others respect that I have no interest in pursuing this series.

BethFishReads I adored this series! Thank goodness there are enough books for every taste and mood 😊 3y

It wasn't my favorite, but I think it set up the premise for the series quite nicely. I'll for sure read volume 2 to give this series a fair shot. It's so-so leaning more towards pick.

OhNoMersault Was a really good series until Willingham went off the rails on the right wing train. 3y
BarbaraJean The first volume isn't the strongest, for sure- but there are some great stories to come. I finished up through vol. 11 this summer, which completes a main story arc quite nicely. He builds some great characters! 3y
