Hello, My Name Is Pabst
Hello, My Name Is Pabst: Baby Names for Nonconformist, Indie, Geeky, DIY, Hipster, and Alterna-Parents of Every Kind | Miek Bruno, Kerry Sparks
3 posts | 3 read
Finally, for alternaparents everywhere, the baby-naming book that will ensure that your baby has the coolest, most unique name on the playground. Ashley and Jaden? Over. Atari, Bedford, Sailor, Puma? Oh-so-in. Indie-leaning alternaparents of every kind, from geeks to Goths, are all grown up and procreating, and they want names that reflect the individuality they pride themselves on. Hello, My Name Is Pabst shows them how to put their stamp on baby-naming, injecting fun into what can be an otherwise contentious process. Names are thematically arranged into lists including "Names You Can Drink at the Bar" (Jager, Hennessey), "Names That Fit Into Skinny Jeans" (Vette, Plank), "Vegan and Gluten-Free Names" (Miso, Quinoa), and "Names to CTRL+C and CTRL+V" (Adobe, Helvetica). Also included are "tipsters" for sparking naming creativity, such as opening a box of crayons or scanning the credits of a foreign film. Pabst presents a whole new approach to baby-naming for a whole new generation of parents who want names that look good on a tote bag and kick ass at the playground.

4/5⭐ The humor in this book is great. It combines reasonable and ridiculous* names into many themed lists with clever descriptions and appropriately titled subsections, playing on lots of popular culture and stereotypes.

*At least, I hope they're meant to be ridiculous; I'll lose whatever little faith I have left in humanity if parents these days are seriously considering names like EPUB, A*da, CarWash, or Generic Surplus.

Mehso-so

Was this humor? Like a gag gift? Or at least a bit serious? Some of the names are quite normal but overall it was fairly bonkers. Maybe it would have given me a laugh while pregnant. At least several of the categories applied to me but I felt a little old for it. Then the authors assume everyone reading was born in the 70s or heaven forbid the 80s? So is this for old people (me) making fun of hipsters? I'm so confused. #mommyreads #ebook

Here are some #nonfiction books that I've read recently. I also have a constant rotation of nonfiction that includes: intercultural communications, language learning, birthing, parenting, homeschooling, music, science, history, and children's nonfiction. I've been starting to enjoy celebrity memoirs within the past year, especially the audio versions. I never really enjoyed memoirs or audiobooks before, so it's been fun to expand my interests.
