White Dog Fell from the Sky
White Dog Fell from the Sky: A Novel | Eleanor Morse
14 posts | 10 read | 25 to read
An extraordinary novel of love, friendship, and betrayal for admirers of Abraham Verghese and Edwidge DanticatEleanor Morses rich and intimate portrait of Botswana, and of three people whose intertwined lives are at once tragic and remarkable, is an absorbing and deeply moving story. In apartheid South Africa in 1977, medical student Isaac Muthethe is forced to flee his country after witnessing a friend murdered by white members of the South African Defense Force. He is smuggled into Botswana, where he is hired as a gardener by a young American woman, Alice Mendelssohn, who has abandoned her Ph.D. studies to follow her husband to Africa. When Isaac goes missing and Alice goes searching for him, what she finds will change her life and inextricably bind her to this sunburned, beautiful land.Like the African terrain that Alice loves, Morses novel is alternately austere and lush, spare and lyrical. She is a writer of great and wide-ranging gifts.

For #readingafrica2022 #botswana I selected this read. I was totally drawn into it and loved the writing! I truly felt I was beside these two very different people. These characters will stay with you long after the last page is read. @Librarybelle @Texreader @BarbaraBB

At the heart of this novel is the friendship between Isaac, a black man from South Africa & Alice, a white expat living a lonely existence in #Botswana. I was surprised by how radically different the two neighboring countries are & I appreciated all the information this story contained about apartheid. Enjoyed this perspective. Another great read for the #ReadingAfrica22 challenge

Cinfhen Thanks @Megabooks I‘m really loving all my books for #ReadingAfrica / they are all a bit different but touch on some common themes. 2y
Megabooks I haven‘t been able to get into that challenge this year. I‘m not sure why. Perhaps it will click later. 🤔🤔 2y
Cinfhen I mean there‘s A LOT going on in your life @Megabooks so it‘s understandable that your heart isn‘t focused on Africa xx 2y

There‘s a lot going on in this novel, set in 1970‘s #Botswana. Im learning quite a bit about the landscape and the harsh realities the black families faced in neighboring South Africa. So glad I found this one at my local charity shop😊 #ReadingAfrica22

Librarybelle A great find! 2y

I have an affinity for novels set in or writers from Africa, so I wanted this novel to focus more on Isaac & S. Africa/Botswana and not on Alice‘s mid-life relationships. Issac and his family‘s story is more compelling.

Shown in the pic with the book is our recent monthly African Heritage box. Was notified yesterday the boxes are being reduced to quarterly shipments. 😭😭 Kids & I are so bummed about it.

rockpools What sort of things come in the African Heritage box? 6y
Tamra @RachelO it is geared for kids up to 12 as an educational resource about Africa and African American history & culture. Books, maps, games, hands-on projects, recipes, postcards, ed info, etc. They have a website and FB page with more details. My kids are Ethiopian born so it‘s been another way to learn and connect. 6y
rockpools That sounds v cool. How sad they're going to be less frequent. 6y

In this heartbreaking novel about the unrest in South Africa during the 1970s, Morse beautifully captures the horror of life during apartheid and the breathtaking landscape of Africa. Her writing is poetic and understated, and her characters are exceptional. This book will stay with me for a long time.

Finally finished my #ReadAroundtheWorld book for Botswana. I can remember who posted about this book but thank you. It was heartbreaking but also with glimmers of hope composed of two related storylines. Alice, a white women living in Botswana hires Isaac, a black South African man as a gardener. Isaac's story is the star of the book, highlighting harsh realities facing black South Africans fleeing from violence to a safer life in Botswana.

Cinfhen This has been on my TBR for years!!! Glad to see it's a pick! 7y

How I feel listening to the narrator of my audiobook when she attempts accents. Her South African sounds like a Scottish accent. It's very distracting. I think I like the book, it's just very hard to listen to certain parts.

rockpools Urgh. That's so off-putting. 7y

JenP @merelybookish she's mostly a good narrator with the exception of a few accents. I'm already committed (80% done) but otherwise, print would be wise 😂 7y

I picked this book for the #readaroundtheworld challenge for #botswana. The story centers around two main characters, a black South African man who flees to Botswana to avoid political persecution and a white woman going through personal turmoil in her life. I enjoyed the author's descriptions of the Botswana landscape and wildlife as well, pitting the personal stories against the scope of the natural world and ultimately the universe.

I gained insights into Botswana and the fragile relationship with their South African neighbor. The book details two journeys of personal discovery; one an expatriate white woman and the second an illegal refugee from South Africa. Their extremely different circumstances provide a rich backdrop as they try to save themselves and others in a world that does not care to be saved; "it carries us a short distance and drops us when it's done with us"

rockpools This sounds really good as well - I think I'm going to have to revisit Botswana in the not-too-distant future. 7y

I started out thinking this book was very formulaic with a "good" white woman and a South African man in trouble escaping to Botswana, but it has transformed into much more and the overriding theme is how small we are against the backdrop of an endless, treeless, waterless expanse. #readaroundtheworld #botswana

tstan I'm about to start this one-thanks for the info! I'm looking forward to it 7y
