Salem's Lot (Bound for Schools & Libraries)
Salem's Lot (Bound for Schools & Libraries) | Stephen King
In his illuminating introduction, Stephen King shares the inspiration for this most enduring of vampire classics.Published a year after Carrie, 'Salem's Lot firmly cemented King's name in the pantheon of great storytellers. His rich and finely crafted tale of a mundane New England town under siege from the forces of darkness is both homage to Brain Stoker and a thoughtful allegory for post-Vietnam society. Considered one of the most terrifying vampire novels ever written, it cunningly probes the shadows of the human heart -- and the insular evils of small-town America.

So, I subscribed to Audible a few months ago because I was trying to finish the tagged book quickly before a book club meeting. I really enjoyed listening to the book, but when I went back and read it again in print, I realized I missed so much on audio. I‘m too easily distracted, & I don‘t think audiobooks are for me. I‘d rather that money go to a BOTM subscription. With that said, I still have 2 credits I need to use. So my question is…(cont ⬇️)

Maggie4483 …is there any book that you feel really needs to be listened to? Something that‘s better on audio than in print? Something that‘s made better by the narrator? I‘d love to hear your recs. Also, any thoughts on Book of the Month? Pros? Cons? Despite my poor listening skills, I‘m all ears. 😊 6mo
CSeydel I usually prefer print, too. Here are a couple that have “full cast audio” that I really enjoyed listening to: Lincoln in the Bardo, by George Saunders; The Making of Another Motion Picture Masterpiece, by Tom Hanks; The Only Plane in the Sky, by Garrett Graff. (edited) 6mo
dabbe I haven't read or listened to it yet, but I've seen TONS of people praising Meryl Streep for reading TOM LAKE. 🤗

Deblovestoread Mary Jane was fully enhanced on the audio version for me. I also enjoyed Unlikely Animals on audio. 6mo
CSeydel Also, if you are at all interested in celebrity memoirs, it‘s fun to hear them read by the author. I don‘t do a lot of memoir but I have listened to a few. Lucky Man, by Michael J Fox; Born Standing Up, by Steve Martin; Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me, by Mindy Kaling 6mo
BookLineNSinker This book is excellent on audio because of involvement with podcasts. I loved the book and I feel it's definitely one that's enhanced by audio. 6mo
Maggie4483 @CSeydel @dabbe @Deblovestoread : Thank you! I'll look into these!!!
@BookLineNSinker - I'm actually reading that in print right now for my NEXT book club meeting (and may hang on to one of those credits just in case I have to rush to finish it 😂). Thank you!!!

I guess, when some random bloke on a book app says that an author with nearly 50 years of worldwide success writes bloated, boring books, it‘s a bit like an out of shape footballer on Hackney Marshes saying he doesn‘t rate Lionel Messi. But the facts are, although I didn‘t bail (Like It) I skimmed. I wish I could “get” King but I think his best ideas are always reinterpreted better by movie makers. Tobe Hooper made ‘Salem‘s Lot iconic. This is dull

Horror would be amongst my #LeastFaveGenre, enough to frighten you in life without purposely doing it by reading a book. Don‘t want the nightmares. Having said that I do enjoy Stephen King‘s non-horror books.

Also add on erotic fiction which I won‘t read.

Carrie might have kickstarted King‘s career, but it‘s ‘Salem‘s Lot that cemented him as a force of nature. This is a remarkable book, equal parts creepy and expansive. One part vampire tale, one part swan song for dwindling, small New England towns that seem to dry up as the world marches forward.

I can‘t believe I‘ve never read this. I also can‘t believe I didn‘t know Stephen King wrote a vampire book. I also also didn‘t know that ‘Salem was actually short for Jerusalem.
I loved this, and really enjoyed reading a vampire story that was actually scary, not sexy (or, worse, TRYING to be sexy). You can definitely tell that it‘s an early work, as there were a lot of loose ends that didn‘t get tied, plot points that that weren‘t followed ⬇️⬇️

Maggie4483 ⬆️⬆️ through on, and main characters whose endings were glossed over and not given the attention I felt they deserved. But overall it was super fun. Allegedly there‘s a new movie coming out this year, but no release date yet. I look forward to seeing it. 9mo

This is a slow burner, laced with dread; as is most of King‘s work. King is the only author who makes me feel genuine fear. He has an uncanny ability to write small towns and lifelike characters, and this is evidently displayed in ‘salems lot.

My first foray into vampires, and these are definitely not the ‘sparkly‘ kind. Another solid book from the master himself!

King‘s classic tale of vampires infiltrating small town America is just as creepy as I remember. This is slow burn horror at its finest, and when things start to ramp up, you‘re stuck on the rollercoaster until it‘s time to get off. King creates just as many lovable characters as evil ones, and The Lot‘s ragtag band of heroes is no exception. A remarkable second novel with impact. I won‘t be looking out my bedroom window at night anytime soon. 4⭐️

The set of Stephen King from my Mom, who has certainly read all of these at least once and is excited that I‘ve hit my King-reading phase. The tagged will probably be the first I read.

A chronic illness memoir from my sister. We both have Crohn‘s (I‘ve been diagnosed since 2013; she was just diagnosed this summer). The author also has Crohn‘s, so this is now on both our TBRs.

A very good King novel. I was expecting gruesome horror and this was more psychological; not a lot of physical action, even at the end. And, having read The Dark Tower first, I was surprised Father Callahan didn't have a bigger presence. One of my favorite things about King, though, is that you really get to know all his characters, and you care about the town before the nightmare begins.

TheNeverendingTBR He's a great character. Lone vampire slayer! His showdown at the Dixie Pig was legendary! 1y

I wasn't on Litsy much yesterday so I somehow missed the posts celebrating King's 75th birthday started by @reggie I have posted extensively about King previously: about how I read IT during a week off from work 5 years ago & the scope & ambition completely changed my idea of what a horror novel could be; I have also talked of my abiding love for the genre bending series & the memorable characters in the Dark Tower; a few times I have mentioned

vivastory King carrying on the epistolary tradition of Frankenstein & Dracula in works like Carrie & The Outsider. Since I was a kid I have always loved King via the made for tv adaptations of works like Sometimes They Come Back & The Stand, but it is only in the past few years that I have become a devoted reader of his work. Ok. I'm excited now.
I was just mentioning yesterday that I wanted to watch the original 'Salem's Lot and then complained to hubs that I couldn't find it anywhere. He just came home with a present! Our Walmart has next to nothing for movies do what are the odds?? It's too late tonight but I'm diving in by the weekend.
Thinking of turning my #ReadKing into a #ReadAndWatchKing experience now. There are SO many adaptations it might be a good time.

Leftcoastzen That‘s why people collect DVDs & even VHS . I keep hearing people say everything is streaming, but not so . So many reasons, rights issues, etc. Some are quite valuable because they are hard to get. 2y
FantasyChick @Leftcoastzen Exactly! I've never stopped collecting them and always check the bins whenever I'm in the store.
