Named a Must-Read Book for Summer by the LA Times and a Most-Anticipated Book of 2025 by Lit Hub and Publishers Weekly - Library Journal Title to Watch The story acclaimed English author Penelope Fitzgerald never wrote, of her real-life journey to Mexico with her son in search of a much-needed inheritance, by Jessica Francis Kane, bestselling author of Rules for Visiting Winter 1952. Penelope Fitzgerald's husband is a struggling alcoholic, their literary journal is on the brink, and she is pregnant with their third child. When she receives a letter from two elderly sisters named Delaney, distant relations with a silver mine, who dangle the possibility of an inheritance, she recognizes it as a creative and practical lifeline. Jessica Francis Kane's brilliantly imagined Fonseca fictionalizes Penelope's real and momentous trip to northern Mexico in pursuit of this legacy. She leaves her two-year-old, Tina, with relatives and sails for New York with her six-year-old, Valpy, in tow. From there, mother and son take a bus all the way to . . . Fonseca. But when they arrive, nothing goes to plan. There are others vying for the Delaney money, and for three months, from Day of the Dead to Candlemas, Penelope must navigate a quixotic household and guide her impressionable son. More and more people frequent the house: an ambitious American couple, various local entrepreneurs and artists (including Edward Hopper and his wife, Jo), and finally a handsome stranger who claims he is a Delaney. With heart, humor, and a deep understanding of her subject that has characterized the range of her work her whole career, Kane (whose work "could have been written by Jane Austen's great great-great-granddaughter" --Oprah Daily) has written much more than an homage: Fonseca is an enthralling world of its own as well as a stunning fictionalization of a season in Fitzgerald's life.

Mehso-so

This is a fictionalised account of when Penelope Fitzgerald, with her 6 year old son, travelled to Mexico in 1952 at the whim of two elderly sisters who supposedly have an inheritance to bestow.

I found this pedestrian - nothing much happened. It also felt very muddled, with many loose ends, cul-de-sacs and contradictions. (And not in a ‘work it out for yourself‘ way, more a bad editing way)

By far the most annoying thing, though, was ⬇️

squirrelbrain …the audio. DON‘T listen to this, unless you like to listen to someone doing an impression of a squeaky, precocious 6 year old. I nearly switched off at the start and wished I had done! Then, there was a Spanish-speaking character, who I presume was meant to be gay, as he was even higher-pitched and with a lisp as well. 🙄 😠 (edited) 3d
TheKidUpstairs Good to know. I was intrigued by the "novel about Penelope Fitzgerald" part, because I love her, but the rest of the description didn't really do much for me. Sounds like I can comfortably skip this one. And, ugh, I hate when narrators push too hard to do "voices", especially for children. 3d
Bookwormjillk Good to know about the audio. Thanks for the warning. 3d

Aims42 Ugh, I hate bad audiobook narrators 😒 They 100% make or break it for me too. And why do they give kids squeaky voices?? It‘s so unrealistic and totally takes me out of the experience. Sorry, didn‘t realize how mad this makes me until just now 🤣 3d
ChaoticMissAdventures This sounds like a skip! Thanks for taking one for the team 😂 3d
Lesliereadsalot Thanks for including me and saving me lots of hours! 3d
Hooked_on_books Oh dear! My library only has the ebook and clearly that‘s a good thing! Those audio choices would make me crazy. 3d
sarahbarnes Wow, thanks for the heads up on this one. I was curious about it given the Penelope Fitzgerald connection, but it sounds like one to skip. Or at least on audio. 3d
Deblovestoread Put a big X on my list. Thanks for doing the work ❤️ 3d
squirrelbrain I‘m worried now that I‘m an outlier, as I‘ve just checked the GR reviews and they‘re not that bad! 😬 Maybe someone else *should* read it (Holly?!) to get another view - just not the audio! 😝 @TheKidUpstairs @Bookwormjillk @ChaoticMissAdventures @Lesliereadsalot @Hooked_on_books @sarahbarnes @Deblovestoread 2d
squirrelbrain @Aims42 - there were a lot of accents in this one too. Spanish / Mexican of course but also Irish and Scottish, which weren‘t too bad. A short burst of the Welsh accent sounded Indian to me! 😬 2d
Hooked_on_books Oh, I‘ll be giving it a try! I won‘t be getting it for another month or so based on the holds info, but it will happen! 2d
Chelsea.Poole Uh oh. I would only listen to this one if I do it at all so it sounds like I should skip. It wasn‘t that appealing to me anyway, I must say. 2d
BarbaraBB You‘re making it easy for me to take a pass on this one! 2d
