1905. Rex Beach was well on his way to becoming a lawyer when he was hit by Gold Rush Fever and left for the Klondike to strike it rich. His novel The Spoilers was quite successful at capturing the excitement of the Gold Rush, complete with claim-jumping, corruption, deception, villains, and heroes. It made the 1906 best sellers list and was made into a movie in 1914 featuring many of the popular actors and actresses of the day.

The (supposedly comfirmed) August #BOTM choices were shared on Facebook. Titles listed in spoiler comments. Don't click if you don't want to know. 😁

Traci1 The Heart Principle by Hoang, Not a Happy Family by Lapina, Inheritance of Orquidea Divina, Once There Were Wolves, and Damnation Spring 3y
Jemgirl2014 Thanks! I was hoping for a romance but I don't own the other two Hoang books in physical copy format. I still may pick it up. Ooh! "Not a Happy List"! I recommended that one to my local library. I'm definitely getting that one! 3y
AmyG Once There Were Wolves!!! Awesome! Thanks for posting! 🙌🏻🎉 3y

Use the "spoiler cover" people! ... actually it doesn't happen too often on Litsy, BUT sometimes people reveal too much, especially in comments (honestly I've probably done it myself, especially when I don't like a book). I also don't like when people post very specific "trigger warnings". For me that's a spoiler. I think it's enough just to say trigger warning, and then if someone needs to they can inquire further. But that's just me. ?

Birdsong28 I agree there is a reason for the spoiler button. Also what sometimes annoys me is when places such as Amazon and Audible have a sale or daily deal people don't put the site i.e UK or otherwise as this is a community of people from all over and some people go and have a look and are disappointed. 😀📚📖 6y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego @Birdsong28 I never thought of that, I don't usually shop online, but that would be helpful to mention if you're US etc. when posting about sales and such. 😊 6y
BarbaraBB Agree on the trigger warning, they are spoilers pretty often. 6y
See All 6 Comments
KT1432 Yesss I‘ve seen many “trigger warning” spoilers. They often get too specific. 6y
DivineDiana I appreciate the trigger warnings. 🤷‍♀️ 6y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego @DivineDiana I understand why ppl use them, but they tend to be too specific. Especially in a public post. I think a general warning. Then if someone wasn't to know the specific trigger they can ask. And maybe use the "spoiler cover"... At least I would appreciate that anyhoo. Usually that sort of content is pivotal to the storyline/ character development / plot twist etc. 6y

So I'm reading Stephen King for the first time and been looking forward to The Dark Tower books.... On advice no intention of peeking at the last line.
Scrolling through Tumblr and there it is.... Seared onto the old brain instantly too, couldn't unsee it 🙄😞🙄

Andrew65 Oh no that‘s the worst! 6y
Tanisha_A Oh no! That is terrible! May the whole anticipation of how it happens (whatever happens) keeps you going. 😶 6y
Cathythoughts That happened to me ( on google) recently... I was so annoyed! It was The Cuckoos Calling. But , the ending had other complicating factors that were a big surprise... hope this is the way for you too 🤞🏻 6y

tpixie Oh no? The end of The Gunslinger. Or the end of the LAST book?? 6y
Christine11 That‘s so annoying! 6y
Ashley_Nicoletto I was on Instagram the other day and this girl posted a photo of another persons direct message to her where this stranger told her the ending of the book she was reading. I was baffled and she was rightfully mad. Keep the endings of books to yourself people. 6y
Balibee146 @tpixie ending of the last one 🙄😥😥 @Ashley_Nicoletto thats just such weird rotten behaviour 6y
tpixie @Balibee146 oh no!! That is despicable!! 6y
tpixie (The journey is still great 👍🏻 ) 6y
Balibee146 Thanks @tpixie yeah still looking forward to it later this year... After The Stand lol 👍 6y

ReadingsByTheC @felinesandfiction @Rachbb3 Glad I'm not the only one! We got spoiled last month with getting them so early. 😁 6y
cameo2012 For what???? What am I missing??? 6y
ReadingsByTheC @cameo2012 We have some very crafty and in the know people on Litsy and they usually can figure out the selections before they're announced on the 1st. 6y
ReadingsByTheC @cameo2012 And since I'm on a book buying ban except for BOTM, I'm super excited to find out. 😊 6y
cameo2012 What book of the month though? Kindle first? 6y
Reviewsbylola I have been checking. Nada except the one I saw for 6y
ReadingsByTheC @cameo2012 The Book of the Month subscription box. You pay $15 a month and on the 1st they give you a choice of 5 brand new hardcovers you can pick for your selection for the month and you can get two additional ones for $10 each if you want. If you want to join, they always have good specials for first-time subscribers. 6y
ReadingsByTheC @Reviewsbylola Guess I will just have to be patient. 😁 6y
cameo2012 Ohhhh. I‘ve not heard of this. I like it. 6y
ReadingsByTheC @cameo2012 It's so nice to have something to look forward to in the mail. And if you end up not liking the book, lots of people on here do swaps of their selections. Check out @BOTM.BookSwap 6y
Cinfhen I was just wondering the same thing....I‘d love to know what‘s in store for us....... 6y
The_Heeler_Booklife Nope. I have been patiently waiting for the spoilers. Well, not so patiently because I keep checking Litsy, a Facebook group, and BOTM for spoilers. On a Facebook group I saw a rumor that The Hazel Wood could be a pick? 6y
ReadingsByTheC @allthingskayla That would be great! I've been looking forward to that one. 6y
The_Heeler_Booklife @ReadingsByTheC really hoping that it does become a pick. If not I‘ll still buy it. 6y
nosferatoos I checked the tag today to see if there are any spoilers 😩😩😩I am tired of thrillers and I‘m hoping for a really good short story collection. I wouldn‘t even be mad if they picked one that came out this month. 6y
ReadingsByTheC @nosferatoos Agreed. I was really hoping for 6y
Jess7 I keep checking this feed. I want to know so bad! 6y
8little_paws @nosferatoos totally agree. Too many thrillers with BOTM. I guess they sell subscriptions though.... 6y
Vikki I keep checking this feed too hoping to be spoiled, lol 6y
ReadingsByTheC @Vikki I know, I'm starting to give up hope. 6y
The_Heeler_Booklife @Vikki I keep checking Litsy and BOTM‘s site everyday and am starting to give up hope as well. I am so impatient that I just need to know. 6y

I don't think I agree with this... 😒 what do you guys think?

Meeko93 I guess it's just like watching a movie before reading the book. You know what's gonna happen, but not every detail. 6y
Ranchan I never want to know the ending if a book! Plus, I'm giving annotated reading a try this year, so paying attention to details should be on point (more than before anyways) too. 6y
starlight97 @Meeko93 that's why I always read the book first 😃 6y

#BookishPetPeeves

No, seriously, I will ruin you. Likewise I will hunt you down if you tell me your negative/mixed feelings about a book while I'm reading or before I'm about to read it. Just. Wait. Until. I'm. Done. 🔪🔪

#MarchIntoReading

Notafraidofwords Yes yes yes. I don't want to know if you hated it, especially if I haven't started it yet and I'm about to. 7y
Notafraidofwords Unless we are both having mixed / negative feelings. 7y
BookishFeminist @Notafraidofwords Seriously! I can't stand when I tell people I'm reading something and they're like "Meh, didn't like it because x y z." I. Haven't. Read. The. Book. Yet. It's a one-sided conversation until I have. Or if people tell me how they feel about it! If I wanted to know, I would have looked at reviews. Half the fun for me is the emotional journey & I can't have that if you tell me the end is sad. 7y
See All 33 Comments
BibliophileMomma Yes. Yes. Definitely yes. I hate this. 7y
Cydster61 War & Peace: Napoleon loses and everyone has the hots for Natasha 7y
Notafraidofwords @BookishFeminist yes! And to be honest I wish people on litsy will use the spoiler tag more often because sometimes I feel like it ruins the entire experience for me if I know you liked the ending 7y
Lizpixie Oh yeah, this one too. I don't understand people who take a certain glee in doing this. Just no. No. 7y
BookishFeminist You're asking for a death wish @Cydster61 7y
BookishFeminist @Notafraidofwords I wish they would too! Though at least I've adjusted so that when I have a book i'm really looking forward to, I just scroll past quickly. I can't help it when it's in my comments though, that's just really asking for it 🙈 7y
BookishFeminist @Lizpixie They do! The compulsive need to discuss a book with a person who hasn't read it. 🙈 I can't. I don't think the thought has ever crossed my mind? Unless I'm just rec'ing a book positively (or like stay away at all costs bc it's hella problematic). Otherwise I don't talk about it unless they want me to! 7y
Notafraidofwords Exactly. Although I do appreciate trigger warnings. 7y
julesG @BookishFeminist @Notafraidofwords But wouldn't that mean no one should post any thoughts about the books they are reading? So we'd just be posting where we're reading or what we're eating while reading the book, because any remark about any book might be a potential spoiler. 7y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag I enjoying making up fake spoilers when my sister is reading a book I've read... (there has to be some perks to being a big sister) 7y
Clare-Dragonfly I like talking to my mom about books I'm reading because even if she's going to read the book, she doesn't mind spoilers because she knows I'll forget what she said 😂 7y
Notafraidofwords @julesG oh no. That's not what I mean at all. I mean like spoilers about the ending or major things about the plot. 7y
itsbrb @julesG I'm wondering the same thing. I'm thinking of what I just posted and I wish I had known a book I had finished had infidelity in it, because I would have skipped over it. When I wrote my review on here, I stated there were several characters who are hard to like and infidelity is throughout the book. I wouldn't normally mark that as a spoiler, but after reading this makes me wonder if I should. @BookishFeminist @notafraidofwords (edited) 7y
Notafraidofwords @itsbrb stuff like that doesn't bother me. I appreciate when someone warns me that a character is unlikeable or specific trigger warnings. 7y
BookishFeminist @julesG That's way overgeneralizing- I mean when someone spoils the experience of a book for me. Usually engaging with me personally knowing I haven't read it. I don't read book reviews for books I'm looking forward to. There's a way to talk about it "I really liked that book!" without telling me what you felt at certain parts before I'm done with it. 7y
BookishFeminist @itsbrb That would bother me. But that's why it's my pet peeve, not yours. Like I said I scroll past reviews of books I'm looking forward to. The more generalized the better. Reviews can be descriptive without getting into specifics and those are the kinds I like before I've read a book. I go back and read reviews after. 7y
LeahBergen I always do that quick scroll, too, over posts on books I'm going to read. 7y
LeahBergen I think there should be more spoiler tags used for classics, too. So many people assume that EVERYONE has read the "biggies" and it's just not true. 7y
BookishFeminist @LeahBergen Yea! That's why I keep my reviews generalized. Broad critique but mostly just what it explores etc. I know lots of folks like specific reviews for various reasons but 🤷🏻‍♀️ not for me. I completely agree about classics. I've had so many ruined for me bc of this! 7y
Elisa 😄 7y
julesG @BookishFeminist I was overgeneralising on purpose. But I think I get what you mean, now. So telling you the book was great and a certain character was really lovely/awful/... would be okay, but telling you that A kissed B and C killed them both for it is a spoiler, right? 7y
BookishFeminist @julesG I don't like character talk bc I like to form my own judgments, but basically that's the idea. But really I don't care what you do on your reviews; they're yours. I just hate when I say I'm reading this book & someone tries to tell me their complicated thoughts/feelings about it. For me it's the emotional journey. Emotional spoilers are spoilers for me. 7y
julesG @BookishFeminist Actually, I'm glad you posted your pet peeve. Don't think I have spoiled the fun of a book in a comment but it's good to be aware of this being a possible problem. 7y
BookishFeminist @julesG So many have done it for me! I think the worst was when I was reading through Game of Thrones—I had a friend who kept asking me where I was and would be like "oh you're getting to the good/boring/sad/exciting whatever part!" Like no, I'm reading the book find someone else to talk to about it until I'm done lol. I actually blocked him on social media for a week until I was done, it was bad ?? 7y
itsbrb @BookishFeminist I'm actually glad you pointed this out, too. I thought I kept my reviews vague enough but I definitely see your point. I also didn't realize that people posted comments like that on what you're currently reading, I usually just leave it at "let me know what you think/how you felt once it's over" and talk afterwards. Sorry people have done that on books for you! I can see why you would block them! 7y
lattesandliterature Spoilers are the worst! I'm so glad Litsy has a function that allows you to tag posts and comments as containing spoilers. 7y
BookishFeminist @itsbrb @julesG Y'all are usually pretty good & understanding on litsy! Thankfully the person I temp blocked isn't on here. It mostly just makes me hesitant to post about popular books since those can be a minefield of mixed reviews that everyone wants to talk about. I do love hearing people's endorsements of books I'm reading tho, and def love discussing them afterwards! Not something I hold against ppl either since it's totally my pickiness 7y
BookishFeminist @emilyalison Yes me too! I wish it had a function for hiding reviews of certain books or tagging certain reviews as spoilers for myself so I don't accidentally scroll past it again (like hiding a post on facebook). That would make it much easier to navigate my difficult pickiness 😂 I mostly just go into books blind knowing that a trusted friend has liked it. (edited) 7y
jfalkens I remember the worst spoiler I got was in High School, I was reading Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (for the first time) and someone saw what I was reading and said "isn't that the one Dumbledore dies in?" ?? 7y
Weaponxgirl @jfalkens lol, so mean. I had my mum do it to me with a anime I was watching. I'm at the beginning she walked in and just goes is that the one everyone dies at the end in? It was good. I nearly cried. 7y
