"A labyrinth of a book--vast and intricate, full of fiendish twists and clever traps--with a deeply human heart at its center. It's thrilling, romantic, often tragic, and always funny; I'm obsessed." --Alix E. Harrow, New York Times bestselling author of Starling House The Raven Scholar is a masterfully woven tale of imperial intrigue from an electrifying new voice in epic fantasy--in a stunning edition featuring French flaps and silver foiled cover effects! Let us fly now to the empire of Orrun, where after twenty-four years of peace, the reign of Bersun the Brusque has come to an end. In the dizzying heat of midsummer, seven exceptional warriors, thinkers, strategists compete to replace him. When one of them is murdered, it falls to Neema Kraa, the emperor's brilliant, idiosyncratic High Scholar, to find the killer and fight for the throne. Neema believes she is alone. But we are here to help; all she has to do is let us in. If she succeeds, we will win an empire. If she fails, death awaits her. But we won't let that happen. We are the Raven, and we are magnificent. ? "Sharply written and intricately plotted. A masterclass in storytelling!" --Ann Leckie, Hugo Award-winning author of Ancillary Justice ? "Fiendishly charming and clever, this is a book you absolutely must devour." --Tasha Suri, World Fantasy Award-winning author of The Jasmine Throne ? "The Raven Scholar is as clever as its namesake--each beloved character, each twist and each turn, is a shiny new gift. It is magnificent." --C. L. Clark, author of The Unbroken ? "Epic fantasy at its finest--fiendish political intrigue, the ultimate trial for the throne and a shocking crime at the center. Simply glorious!" --Georgia Summers, author of The City of Stardust ? "Engrossing and unputdownable...my favorite read of the year. A conflagration of court intrigue, religious folktale, and characters with deliciously murky motivations, The Raven Scholar is a pure delight." --Bethany Jacobs, Philip K. Dick Award-winning author of These Burning Stars

10 before the end of the year?

How about these hardbacks staring accusingly at me from beside my sofa?

Or maybe just the 10 or more books I'm reading at the moment 😅😅

Politics-driven high fantasy with all the classic tropes: royal intrigue, deep lore, and an epic tournament. Add a sacred animal companion with no patience for human nonsense and you've got me! It's tropey, it's epic, it's a ride.

I had a really good time reading this. The Raven narration felt a little odd when it came in but overall I kind of enjoyed it after a while. I enjoyed the world building and magic system. My only complaint is that the main character read a little younger than in her 30s to me.

9 books read in May. The Raven Scholar was my absolute favorite, but I also really enjoyed The Reappearance of Rachel Price and First Lie Wins.

This will be one of my favorite reads of 2025. Couldn't put it down. I was expecting the fantasy and the mystery, but wasn't prepared for the humor and banter. It was just really well written and fun. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

#WondrousWednesday @Eggs

Thanks for the tag @TheSpineView !

1. Most recent book purchase was the tagged book (which I really liked) along with The Floating World (also good) and Grave Empire (good so far).

2. I do enjoy reviewing books and do so either on Litsy or at my book club where I always give a rundown of what I‘ve read, recommend and why.

TheSpineView YW! Have a grand Wednesday! 6mo

It‘s been forever & a day since a book so thoroughly captured my attention (which would surprise the reviewers I‘ve read who describe the pacing as very slow). A fantasy that relies on many familiar tropes, it nonetheless entertains & keeps you guessing with big reveals upending everything. I disliked the protagonist but couldn‘t get enough…best of all, I have an idea about where the story might go & it will be great if it does. Entertaining read.

Low pick.

First book in trilogy that suffers from Middle-Book-Syndrome. Could have been shorter (#audiobook was 24+ hours, I listened mainly at 2.0x); could have less POV (bit confusing and I'm saying that although the narrator did a good job); could read less YA - it's NOT YA, but the dialogue often reads like YA. Why a prologue plus some chapters from the POV of a character that doesn't play an active role in the rest of the book?

⬇️

julesG Liked the writing style, but again, it could have worked with less detailed backstory/history/descriptions. Villainous villains, court intrigue, some snide remarks about politics that is absolutely fitting for the current time. Bit of a romance subplot. TW: mildly gory details 6mo

Leniverse Thanks for joining me in Easter Crime! You're halfway to being an honorary Norwegian now. 😁 6mo
julesG @Leniverse 😁😁😁 I should do one of those genetic tests. I might be a quarter Norwegian or Swedish. 6mo

BarbaraBB I‘ve never read her. I must change that. Five stars from you! 6mo
jenniferw88 @BarbaraBB she is an autobuy author for me, so I'm not really surprised it was 5 ⭐️! She has two series - if you like fantasy, this one in her new series is the book to try, but if you prefer (historical) mysteries, then you might enjoy the one in this comment better. 6mo
BarbaraBB Thank you! The quote you whatsapped me really made me lol 6mo
jenniferw88 @BarbaraBB there's a lot of amusing quotes in both series, so you should (🤞) like her books. 6mo
