Throwback to yesterday, when I tried halloumi for the first time & attempted to sink into an Egypt-centred Victorian romance. A day and a half later and I‘m still just halfway through, even though it‘s a small book. I‘m not disinterested in it, but I find the emotional side lacking. I feel like Helmy wanted to write a deeper story about colonial exploitation but was obligated to hit particular category romance beats that don‘t mesh with the rest.
