The Carter of 'La Providence'
The Carter of 'La Providence': Inspector Maigret #4 | Georges Simenon
3 posts | 3 read
The fourth book in the new Penguin Maigret series: Georges Simenon's tragic tale of lost identity, in a gripping new translation by David Coward. What was the woman doing here? In a stable, wearing pearl earrings, her stylish bracelet and white buckskin shoes! She must have been alive when she got there because the crime had been committed after ten in the evening. But how? And why? And no one had heard a thing! She had not screamed. The two carters had not woken up. Inspector Maigret is standing in the pouring rain by a canal. A well-dressed woman, Mary Lampson, has been found strangled in a stable nearby. Why did her glamorous, hedonistic life come to such a brutal end here? Surely her taciturn husband Sir Walter knows - or maybe the answers lie with the crew of the barge La Providence. Penguin is publishing the entire series of Maigret novels in new translations. This novel has been published in previous translations as Lock 14 and Maigret Meets a Milord. 'Compelling, remorseless, brilliant' John Gray 'One of the greatest writers of the twentieth century . . . Simenon was unequalled at making us look inside, though the ability was masked by his brilliance at absorbing us obsessively in his stories' Guardian 'A supreme writer . . . unforgettable vividness' Independent

This early book in the Maigret series takes place on a French canal in the 1920's. I learned a lot about horse-drawn barges, but as I was reading this in French, I had to spend a lot of time looking up the translation of nautical terms!

Gissy I need to re-read this series!🤗❤️ 2y
TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! 2y
kwmg40 @Gissy I've only read a few in the series. I'm really enjoying these books but Simenon was so prolific that I doubt I'll ever finish the series (or even a large part of it)!

@TheAromaOfBooks Thanks for the encouragement! #BookSpinBingo is really helping me get books off the TBR stack.

Sunday reading - I borrowed this from my local library yesterday and couldn't wait to start, even though I have more than enough books on the go.

Fifth in the Maigret series I've read. Grittier, darker, with twisted characters I didn't expect. Great mystery.
