Lilith's Brood (Turtleback School & Library)
Lilith's Brood (Turtleback School & Library) | Octavia E Butler
"Dawn": After nuclear war destroys the world, Earth's survivors are rescued by the miraculously powerful Oankali aliens -- who survive by merging genetically with primitive peoples without their permission."Adulthood Rites": Desperate to regain their world, childless humans seek to cleanse the alien taint by kidnapping hybrid children. But the raiders are blind to the truth of Earth's new children."Imago": The futures of both humans and aliens rest in one young being's successful metamorphosis into adulthood.

#12Booksin2021

I only read the 3rd book in this series, Imago, in March, but am tagging the bind up which has the entire trilogy. Butler‘s imagination knows no bounds. This is a story of humanity and all its strengths and weaknesses when faced with an alien people who offer to save us, but at a price. This is Sci-Fi that asks tough questions, but doesn‘t provide easy answers.

Andrew65 Sounds a good read, 2y
Reggie I read all 3 books a couple of summer ago and the first book has Lilith being saved by the Oankali (I think is what they‘re called). When she gets introduced to the other surviving humans, one of the first things they want to make is guns. It was such a bummer to read but can‘t say I disagree with her assessment of us. I really liked all 3 books. 2y
Ruthiella @Reggie I appreciated how the Oankali did not believe humans could overcome their hierarchical nature too. She raises so many questions about our potential and pitfalls. 2y

This photo is from Oprah mag.com: https://www.oprahmag.com/entertainment/books/g33459612/octavia-butler-books/.

For the #FreeThinker prompt, I immediately thought of Octavia E. Butler. Where other sci-fi writers sometimes just transpose a conventional story on to a futuristic setting, Butler pushed boundaries and allowed her imagination free reign, even if that takes the reader to uncomfortable places.

Eggs Agreed! Well done 👍🏼 3y

The Xenogenesis trilogy by Octavia Butler was amazing.

Ruthiella Ooh, great choice! I still have Adulthood Rites and Imago to read. 😀 4y

Day 28 - #Brood #BeautifulWords
#LilithsBrood #OctaviaButler

The acclaimed trilogy that comprises Lilith's Brood is Hugo and Nebula award-winner Octavia E. Butler at her best.

Presented for the first time in one volume with an introduction by Joan Slonczewski, Ph.D., Lilith's Brood is a profoundly evocative, sensual -- and disturbing -- epic of human transformation.

Of all the books I've read, especially sci-fi, I've never read anything quite like this amazing trilogy. Butler was far ahead of her time and she weaves a fantastic world that leaves the reader a bit uncomfortable, but questioning, of their own morality and values.

This definitely makes me curious of other works by Butler. She's a badass. 😁

If the goal of this trilogy was to make me feel just as uncomfortable as the resisters, it succeeded. Though none of the scenes were graphic, I couldn't help but imagine tentacle sex.
A strange but fascinating story that made me curious about Butler's other work.

I am curious how the Oankali originally started and which other species they traded with to reach their current form.

Ruthiella I‘ve only read the first one in this trilogy but I agree, Butler really gets under the reader‘s skin. I‘ve read other books from her and she‘s fearless.😱 5y

Enjoyed this. Quite an unsettling world, but Butler might have been a genius. ZZZzZZ'd through the new year waking only briefly at fireworks. Breathed a sigh of relief that the toddler slept through it (win!). There is an abundance of winter citrus in the back yard, so I may have to make a salted lemon tart 😏

The good always tempers the bad, right?

My father was hospitalized, again, yesterday. I had to drive an hour and a half, in heavy fog, to visit him today.

I couldn't go that far without doing a bit more than just visit the hospital, though, so I found a nice little Vietnamese place for a bowl of pho for lunch, and stopped by a cute little bookshop just across from the hospital and picked up this book.

I know I've posted about this series before but it was the first thing I thought of for today's #anditsaugust prompt. After the Oankali save the Earth, they repopulated it with #seniorcitizens. The humans they rescued and returned haven't aged during their time in deep stasis on the Oankali's ships but they're well over two and a half centuries old, if I remember the story correctly.

readordierachel Did you hear that Ava Duvernay is developing this as a TV series? 7y
EchoLogical @ReadOrDieRachel I did! On one hand I'm super excited. On the other, I think it'll be on TNT and I'm not really sure that bodes well for the series. 🤔 7y

The trilogy is basically a multigenerational family saga. Each of the books has a certain focus and I think would almost work as standalone. There is no middle book syndrome here, all three books gripped me the same. It's my first O.E. Butler and I am so impressed with her storytelling and how she incorporates her observations of the human race. The book is also a bit sexy and not in the "his six pack glistens in the sun" type of way.
