You spend your whole time on an island looking out to sea. Perhaps what you are facing is yourself. Sixteen-year-old Stephanie West has been dragged from Sydney to remote Maatsuyker Island off the coast of Tasmania by her parents, hoping to recapture a childhood idyll and come to terms with their grief over the death of Steph's twin brother. Cut off from friends and the comforts of home, exiled to a lonely fortress and a lighthouse that bears the brunt of savage storms, the months ahead look to be filled with ghosts of the past. Steph's saviour is Tom Forrest, a 19-year-old deckhand aboard a crayfishing boat. When the weather allows, Tom visits the island, and he and Steph soon form an attraction. But Tom must conceal at all costs the illegal fishing he takes part in, orchestrated by his tyrannical brother. And he dare not dwell on his fear of the sea or his deep-worn premonition that the ocean will one day take him. Wildlight is an exquisite, vividly detailed exploration of the wayward journey of adolescence, and how the intense experience of a place can change the course of even the most well-planned life.

#AyUpAugust #Day13 #Rain Catching up again on this months challenge, bear with me. In this lovely Australian novel, 16yr old Stephanie has been dragged from Sydney to remote Maatsuyker Island off the Tasmanian coast for a six month stint recording weather conditions, including lots of rain & storms. After the death of her twin brother, the family hope that the isolation will help to bring them back together as a family. Beautiful story told well.

#marchintoreading #day7 #lighthouses I love lighthouses.I love stories based in them, I love real life stories about them. The last book I've read based around one is this Australian novel. After her twin brother dies,a teenage girl & her parents take a six month position in a lighthouse on a small island off Tasmania, reporting weather conditions. The family try to heal amidst the isolation & storms. This is a real position they advertise each year.

LeeRHarry I've got this on my LitsyAtoZ list, sounded good 😊 7y
Michelle_mck I keep looking at this at the library 7y
Lizpixie @LeeRHarry @Michelle_mck I loved the setting of this, it's very evocative and melancholy. But I like that, my ideal sea is a stormy one I'm not much for blue skies and sandy beaches. (edited) 7y
Hoopiefoot I can't wait to read this 7y
Hooked_on_books If I ever need a sabbatical, that position looks like an amazing option! 7y

#seasonsreadings2016 #day7 #setonanisland This beautiful novel about family, grief & growing up is set on a small island off the coast of Tasmania, which is an island state itself. It's about a family coming to terms with the death of their son by upping their life & committing to a year as weather keepers on a remote lighthouse island in the Southern Ocean. Beautiful, very evocative. Made me want to live there as well, I much prefer stormy seas.

#bookisholympics #bookseven #goingforgold And we're done! Book seven is toast *applause* What a beautiful book. Makes me want to go man a lighthouse in tassie, the descriptions of the island, the smell of salt & teatree is fantastic. I'm a solitary person myself, mostly. I think I could happily spend six months on an island, just me,the hubby & a few books. Well,a few hundred maybe. The only criticism of this is it didn't end the way I wanted it to.
