The Angel and the Apothecary
The Angel and the Apothecary | Kate Rose
1 post | 2 read
The story is set in St-Giles-in-the-Fields, London, in 1740. A gifted gentleman apothecary, able to experience another’s sickness in his body, tends to the city's poorest inhabitants. Jeremiah Goode's life has, however, reached its lowest depths to become insular and loveless. Close to bankruptcy - for he has too often been dispensing medicine to the poor for free - Jeremiah has been given him one month to pay off his debts or else face debtor's prison. In debt and troubled by the past, he must ultimately discover the healing power of love in order to cure himself and redeem his life. This is a story about how love holds up a mirror to one’s imperfections and how it can ultimately cure. Jeremiah was ahead of his time in dispensing medicine free of charge to the poor for apothecaries eventually became, what we call today, general practitioners.

An apothecary who dispenses his wares to help the sick, mostly free of charge is facing debtors prison. This story follows him as he tries to resolve his problems. There is no doubt the author is skilled in the written word but this skill does not make this an enjoyable read. Page after page of descriptive text just makes this book drag on forever. As the reader I found it psychologically draining. Maybe the ending will be its redemption for some?
