A dedicated CIA agent becomes an unexpected ally to a woman haunted by the kidnapping of her family, in this thrilling novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Danielle Steel. Theodora Morgan is fashion royalty. Founder of a wildly popular online shopping service, she is one of the most successful businesswomen in the world, although she prefers to keep a low profile, especially over the last months. It was a year ago when the unthinkable struck her family, and her husband, industry mogul Matthieu Pasquier, and their son were kidnapped and held for ransom—a nightmare that ended in tragedy. The case has gone cold, despite evidence linking the crime to Matthieu’s Russian competitors. Theo has reluctantly gone back to work running her company. On the flight to a launch party for one of her highly anticipated pop-up shops in New York City, she crosses paths with high-society networker Pierre de Vaumont. Theo politely invites him to her event—unaware that Pierre has been flagged by the CIA. Senior supervising CIA operative Mike Andrews investigates Pierre’s suspicious Russian contacts and clears him to enter the country, but when he realizes that Theodora Morgan is on the same flight, he becomes concerned for her safety. Posing as a lawyer, Mike begins a covert mission—starting with Theo’s opening party. When Mike and Theo meet, their connection is instant, but Theo is completely unaware of Mike’s true objective or identity… or that the life she is rebuilding is in grave danger.

Bailedbailed

This book is labelled a thriller. A CIA agent becomes obsessed with meeting a celebrity widow because he wants to "protect" her and lies about who he is and what his intentions are to get to know her. Stalker thriller, right? Wrong. When she discovers his deceit, she finds it charming and falls madly in love with this man she feels so safe with. ? Also, the prose flows like a grocery list. Perhaps her other books are better, but I won't find out.

Reggie Yeah, I tried one of hers about 5 years ago for nostalgia‘s sake and it was horrible. Never again. 1y
LitStephanie @Reggie good to know. I guess "available in every grocery store" does not equate to excellent writer. ? 1y

Pickpick

Suspects by Daniel Steel, overall - an enjoyable read.
On the downside for me-this book follows the typical Daniel Steele model that many of her books do; ~Bad things happen to good people. Privileged good people have tons of money. Money can't buy happiness, can't bring your loved ones back but, it does allow you to live more than comfortably, to do and experience thing that many people can not which in turn can(cont in comments)...

TheHeartlandBookFairy positively impact the good people's future.~
Now the good news… I enjoyed that the main character in this book was a strong independent woman who wasn't looking for a man to rescue her. I enjoyed the intrigue and the suspense, its a bit more if a thriller/romance. Theo and Mike make an interesting couple, a top level CIA agent and a fashion icon. Kidnapping, murder, International intrigue, cross continental travel, romance and more. I prefer it when DS breaks the mold and writes outside of her "normal" but this story grabbed me and kept me reading till the end. Same mold, new story, a few twists, good read.
