#OnThisDay in 1900 the Hanlin Academy was destroyed by fire during the Boxer Rebellion. Who set fire to the ancient library is unclear - the Chinese blamed the British, the Brits blamed the Chinese. The Academy had been in operation since 708 CE, and its library held countless ancient texts which are now lost to history. #HistoryGetsLIT
