Breaking Down the Walls of Heartache
Breaking Down the Walls of Heartache: How Music Came Out | Martin Aston

It is also a very timely tale, given the prominence of same-sex issues such as marriage equality, alongside the retrogressive steps in places such as Russia and parts of Africa, where songs encapsulating the gay/lesbian experience mirror those of the Sixties, signifying how the journey from illegality and bigotry to freedom is still far from over.

Pickpick

A history of LGBT people in the music industry (singers, musicians, producers, songwriters) over the last 100 years. It is mainly focussed on the US and the UK, with occasional nods to the rest of the English-speaking world, Western Europe and South America, and a world tour in the last chapter. 👇

rwmg I frequently got distracted while reading this, looking up the songs mentioned on YouTube, where they exist. The author's attempt to be comprehensive meant at times the text basically felt like a list of names many of which I'd forgotten again ten minutes later. A worthy effort but for me at its best where it served as a trip down memory lane. 2y

Continuing with “Breaking Down the Walls“ and “Never Say Goodbye“. If I finish either of them, starting “The Gentleman's Guide“ or “The Sun Goes Down“ but I haven't decided which yet.

Continuing with the chapter a day reading of “Excellent Women“

I'll continue with Breaking Down the Walls. I doubt I'll finish it because I keep getting distracted looking up the music discussed on YouTube.

While out and about I'll read the Elizabeth Peters book
