Next to Nothing
Next to Nothing: Stories | Keith Banner
1 post | 1 to read
O. Henry Prize-winning author Keith Banner's new collection of short fiction recounts the troubled lives of ne'er-do-wells and outsiders. Few writers capture the quintessence of awkward domesticity and growing up queer like Banner. The banality of life, whether it be trapped in front of the television or popping pills for E.D., is exposed and mocked with aplomb.

Couldn‘t sleep, so picked up a book we‘ve had unread for years. I read the 1st 2 stories and got Manual for Cleaning Women/Last Night at the Lobster vibes. Banner captures the resilience of small town working class gays & the spiritual vacuity of American suburbia.

But lovey moments can take place in empty parking lots. The image that sticks with me is a bat flying in and out of the light from a lamppost outside a Pizza Hut. Bleakly tender.

Reggie You got me at bleakly tender. 2y
