Heart of the Game: The Heart's Victory and Rules of the Game: A 2-in-1 Collection | Nora Roberts
1 post | 1 read
#1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts gets to the Heart of the Game in this collection of two novels about the drives and desires between people playing to win championships of the heart. The Heart's Victory Once, Cynthia “Foxy” Fox pursued racecar driver Lance Matthews, who dismissed her teenage attentions as a simple crush. Now a professional photographer, she is assigned to cover the racing circuit—and seeing him again thrills her even as she finds his dangerous career unnerving. Lance cannot believe the awkward girl he once knew has become a confident and desirable woman. And fate has given him the opportunity to discover who Foxy really is—and if the love she once felt for him can be rekindled. Rules of the Game Brooke Gordon left her orphaned and impoverished childhood in the dust when she rose to prominence as a respected television director. She has no time or tolerance to coach arrogant baseball champion Parks Jones how to hit his marks for a thirty-second spot no matter how charming he appears on and off camera. But Parks isn’t a man used to striking out with women—and he’s discovered that waiting for Brooke to throw him the perfect pitch will win him a lifetime of love.

Mehso-so

I'm so behind on reviews!!! And life, really 😂 At any rate, this one is a twofer as it includes both The Heart's Victory and Rules of the Game, two of Roberts's 80s romances. They were both... not awesome haha Heart's Victory is about a woman who was raised by her older brother, a racecar driver, so she grew up on “the circuit“ and always had a crush on her brother's friend. Now she's back on the circuit on assignment as a photographer and ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) sparks fly. This one had a little much of the “grabbing and kissing until she gives in“ routine that was so popular in the early 80s and made a really weird jump in the middle of the story where they suddenly decide to get married and now all their issues are about her settling in with his rich family?? It felt like two stories in one and was a bit confusing.

Rules of the Game the protagonist directs commercials and her new client is an⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) up & coming baseball star. This one wasn't too bad, it just didn't really go anywhere. There wasn't really any reason that the two of them couldn't be together, other than the female MC being all “I don't do commitments“, which felt underdeveloped. Both of these were fine for one-off reads, but they definitely aren't shining stars of Roberts's writing!

However, both qualify for #19822022 (1982 & 1984) @Librarybelle

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) Heart's Victory also took me to Indiana for #RoadTripUSA2022 @megnews and checked off the Automotive prompt for #Fourfoursin22 @lauredhel

So at least they got some prompts taken care of!! 😂
