The Aquanaut: A Graphic Novel
The Aquanaut: A Graphic Novel | Dan Santat
6 posts | 8 read | 1 to read
Dive in to this whimsically adventurous graphic novel from Caldecott Medalist Dan Santat! Ever since her father was lost at sea, Sophia has been moping around Aqualand, the marine theme park her dad and uncle created. But Sophia's world is turned upside down when an "aquanaut" breaks into the park's research lab. To her amazement, Sophia discovers that the aquanaut is not what it seems -- inside lives a band of four goofy sea creatures! And when they all realize that Aqualand has evolved into something much darker than Sophia's dad had envisioned, Sophia is determined to help the aquanaut crew free the park's captive marine life before it's too late.

4⭐A little girl named Sophia loses her father to science exploration. There is a shipwreck, and her father is lost at sea, but his scientific breakthrough is saved and brought home by the uncle. The uncle and family are part of Aqualand that is supposed to be about science but is more about money and entertainment. Years later Aqualand is in a bit of trouble, and the powers that be will not let the scientist work on/with their amazing discovery

LibrarianRyan But an Aquanaut walks into the park and things start to change. This is no man in a water suit. It is the animals of the sea driving this human suit on a hunt to find a safe space. This book is amazing. Everything done by Santat is amazing, so this meets expectations. It does feel a little sad, but the story is one kids will understand, and one they will want to read more than once. 7mo

I've been struggling with reading lately & I've put a bookmark in about 5 books that aren't doing it for me. I do complain about my 10 year old doing the same thing so now I have guilt too!! 🤫 I got this last weekend in our anniversary travels. I absolutely LOVE Dan Santat so count me in for a graphic novel in a SECOND! 💜

Ultimately a fun adventure featuring sentient sea creatures operating an antique diving suit, though I didn‘t connect as much emotionally as I‘d hoped I would.

This definitely gave me Finding Nemo vibes (a good thing) & I really enjoyed this story about a young girl trying to find her way after her father was lost at sea. One day when she‘s at the marine theme park he opened with his brother, Sophia meets someone new and adventure ensues. This is a heartfelt story about grief & family. It‘s also a story about the environment, marine life and so much more. Another fantastic story from Santat. 🐠🐙🦀⛴

I was lucky enough to get my hands on an ARC of Gallant and I absolutely loved it. Excited to revisit the finished copy. And a Dan Santat graphic novel is pretty much an automatic buy for me.
