Long ago, all living creatures on this land shared a special balance with one another. The pugulatmu'j--the Little People--were the original guardians of the land, and they looked after all living things. As time passed, we forgot these playful yet powerful guardians, but they did not forget us. Occasionally, they make their presence known with the little tricks they play. When her hair clip disappears, Mali is devastated. It was special, made by her giju'. Her mom thinks she lost it, but Mali knows it was stolen by the pugulatmu'j.Soon after, Mali is surprised to meet Puug--and he's wearing her hair clip. If she helps him find what he needs, she has a chance of getting it back. As they hunt for the objects on Puug's list, Mali uncovers a lot of unanswered questions along the way.Why is there a giant chasing them? Will she really get her hair clip back? And why is Puug collecting these things anyway?Join Mali and Puug as they race to keep one step ahead of an ancient giant in the first volume of this graphic novel series for young readers.

In this colourful children‘s graphic novel, a contemporary adventure set in Canada‘s Maritimes, Mi‘kmaw author Brandon Mitchell incorporates supernatural elements based on traditional beliefs. Besides being a cute story, I love the nuanced view on thievery, as well as a different approach on dealing with monsters. Digital art created by Russian Canadian Veronika Barinova.

I‘m not comfortable with the library‘s decision to classify this as fantasy, since it‘s based on traditional Mi‘kmaw beliefs.

KathyWheeler I don‘t like genre classifications — it can be difficult to decide where exactly something belongs because some books fit more than one genre while others, like this one, don‘t really fit the genre they‘re placed it. Available genres are also really broad and don‘t allow for nuance. 2y
Lindy @KathyWheeler Yes, it‘s true that not all books fit neatly into one genre. It makes it easier for patrons browsing, though, to have genre categories. 2y
KathyWheeler @Lindy I know that it‘s supposed to help with browsing and it probably does. I work in an academic library so I‘m not as used to this system. I mainly use my public library‘s e-collections. 2y

Lindy @KathyWheeler Studies show that separation into genre categories does improve browsability for all but the smallest collections. Did you know that ebook databases can often be searched by genre also? Libby has that feature. You probably already know what you are looking for when you use your public library‘s ebooks, but it‘s helpful for browsing there too. (edited) 2y
KathyWheeler @Lindy I did! I actually use the genre filter in Hoopla and CloudLibrary. Sometimes their classifications are strange though. I found a completely serious book about communication in marriage in the comedy section of Hoopla once. In fact, that‘s the section they seem to have the most problems with — the mystery section is great. 2y
Lindy @KathyWheeler 😁That reminds me of a glitch I occasionally find in Litsy and in my library‘s online catalogue: book records paired with the image of a completely different title. 2y
KathyWheeler @Lindy yeah — I‘ve seen that a few times on Hoopla. 2y

5🌟My son and I really enjoyed this adventurous graphic novel! It emphasized remembrance, culture and connection. It was so great to see a book about the Mi'kmaq people of Canada's Atlantic Provinces. It prompted us to learn more about them and their culture. Reccomended this one for the graphic novel lovers in your life ages 6-8. #bookreview #canlit
