The Finishing Touch
The Finishing Touch | Brigid Brophy
2 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
The tweedy Miss Hetty Braid worships the lovely but selfish Miss Antonia Mount, her co-proprietor at the most exclusive finishing school on the French Riviera. The girls they teach are quite remarkable, though hardly in the sense of academic distinction. But trouble looms when Antonia announces that 'Royalty is coming.' The great day arrives, and though at first things go tolerably well, disaster springs from good intentions. This Faber Finds edition includes a 1987 introduction by Brigid Brophy and a new preface by Sir Peter Stothard. 'A wicked little entertainment... plaubly not meant for the moralists or naive.' Evening Standard 'An outrageously indelicate joke made in beautifully mannered prose.' Daily Herald 'Waspish and witty.' TLS

Pickpick

This novella, set at an exclusive finishing school, definitely retains the lyrical style heavy with description that I fell in love with in The Snow Ball. The characters here are similarly complex, quiet observers, spending most of the novella lost in their own thoughts. I didn‘t enjoy the subject of this nearly as much as the first of her novels I read, but this author is definitely someone I‘ll read more from. #WinterGames2021 #TeamGameSleighers

My morning novella is so full of French vocabulary I don‘t know that I‘m giving up on looking up each word and have decided to absorb them atmospherically whenever possible.

EvieBee Thank you for putting her on my radar with your last review! I requested the same book as a ILL from my library and now just patiently waiting. 💕 2y
