Death in Cornwall
Death in Cornwall | G.M. Malliet
3 posts | 3 read | 1 to read
A humorous cozy set in the picturesque surroundings of Cornwall starring Cambridge DCI Arthur St. Just and his fiance Portia De'Ath. To celebrate their engagement, DCI Arthur St. Just and Portia De'Ath visit the quiet village of Maidsfell in Cornwall. Upon arriving they find the villagers in an uproar over plans to redevelop the local seafront. The fishermen want to build a new slipway to aid their business, but many residents worry it will spoil the view for the tourists who help drive the economy. After a heated village meeting on the issue, St. Just overhears an argument involving Lord Bodwally - an unpopular aristocrat staunchly opposed to the plans. Later, Bodwally's lifeless body is discovered. It's murder. Although Bodwally was disliked, who'd go so far as to kill him? St. Just, although an outsider from Cambridge, feels compelled to help local authorities investigate. Is Bodwally's death linked to the seafront, his suspect business dealings, or a secret from the past? One thing is certain, the fallout threatens to change Maidsfell forever . . .

*Interestingly, this referred quite a bit to Covid, and they called it the “plague time”. I kept thinking they meant the Black Plague. ? Is that common parlance in the UK or specifically Cornwall?*

DCI St. Just and his fiancée, Portia De‘Ath are vacationing in Cornwall. A unique setting, with tensions between new and old, locals and tourists, fishers and wealthy weekenders. What began as a vacation quickly turns into a busman‘s holiday ⬇️

mabell … when Arthur and Portia discover a murder victim. The blurb describes this as a humorous cozy, and I don‘t think that is quite accurate. There may be a witty exchange or a joke, but for the most part, these tend toward the serious - plumbing the depths of human nature. 2021 for #192025 2y
Librarybelle I‘m curious about “plague time” too, and my mind would think about the Black Plague as well! 2y
mabell @Librarybelle I‘m glad it isn‘t just me! I‘ll have to goggle it to see what I can find about the use of “plague time” 🤔 2y

First in this series, but definitely not the last. The whole time I was reading this, I just kept thinking the BBC should do a series! The characters were each unique; there was a lord, fishers, a Michelin starred restaurant, a Hawaiian shirt wearing curate...all such fun. The mystery was intriguing and the conclusion was satisfying. Additionally, our hero and heroine are such a lovely couple and really seem to understand and support each other!
