Stranger Beside Me: The Shocking Inside Story of Serial Killer Ted Bundy (Updated)
Stranger Beside Me: The Shocking Inside Story of Serial Killer Ted Bundy (Updated) | Ann Rule
THE DEFINITIVE WORK OF AMERICAN TRUE CRIME FROM "AMERICA'S BEST TRUE-CRIME WRITER" "(Kirkus Reviews)" Utterly unique in its astonishing intimacy, as jarringly frightening as when it first appeared, Ann Rule's "The Stranger Beside Me" defies our expectation that we would surely know if a monster lived among us, worked alongside of us, appeared as one of us. With a slow chill that intensifies with each heart-pounding page, Rule describes her dawning awareness that Ted Bundy, her sensitive coworker on a crisis hotline, was one of the most prolific serial killers in America. He would confess to killing at least thirty-six young women from coast to coast, and was eventually executed for three of those cases. Drawing from their correspondence that endured until shortly before Bundy's death, and striking a seamless balance between her deeply personal perspective and her role as a crime reporter on the hunt for a savage serial killer -- the brilliant and charismatic Bundy, the man she thought she knew -- Rule changed the course of true-crime literature with this unforgettable chronicle.

Ted Bundy has always been one of the serial killers that interests me the most and going into this I already knew most everything about Bundy‘s case but I‘d never read this book. And this book seemed to go on forever and ever. The parts that dragged were so boring maybe partly because of Rule‘s writing and also probably due to legal court proceedings.

Although well researched and well written; I could not enjoy, for want of a better word, this book. Despite Forewords and Afterwords I found Ann Rule infuriating, the book made me angry at her complicity in his affairs, her concern over his wellbeing and denial. As the mother of a daughter who could be any one of the innocent young ladies pictured above - my sympathies lie with them.

ThrillerQueen I'm still reading, but it's obvious that she had a hard time reconciling the man she knew with the man he turned out to be in the end. 4d

Not even a television script could make it believable that a crime writer could sign a contract to write a book about a killer, and then have the suspect turn out to be her close friend. It wouldn‘t wash.

He smiled at me. He looked like he wanted me to help him and I was almost going to … until I noticed his eyes … they were very weird and they gave me the creeps. I began walking very rapidly away.

As I read about the politician that let Ted Bundy babysit his kids I wonder how neurotic those parents became afterwards. How would you react if you found out a serial killer was your babysitter? It would freak me right the f@%! out. I think I would question every decision I ever made as a parent from then on.

veritysalter I‘m reading this now. It‘s been on my TBR for so long. It is fascinating and appalling in equal measure. His charm and charisma must have been amazing; to fool so many people for so long and to be able to hide the monster within him from his public self. 1w

I‘m in the mood where I pick up everything and take the longest to finish anything.

I‘ve watched The Bundy Tapes, I‘ve just watched the Efron movie, I love the movie The Riverman where Carey Elwes plays Bundy, and I‘ve studied this case in my schooling. I‘m just fascinated, and this new side (from a close friend duped) will be so interesting.

I'm going back to the TBR jar (box) method of picking my next read because its the only way to give some of the older books on my shelf a chance! Otherwise I'll only end up reading new releases.

Ann Rule and Ted Bundy were friends and coworkers at a Crisis hotline. At the same time, he was committing the murders that she was writing about. It‘s terrifying that someone so smart and educated about crime can still be unaware that a serial killer is working side by side with her and walking her to her car after work to ensure she is safe (because there‘s a killer on the loose ya know) 🥶 #younevercantell #maymoviemagic @Cinfhen @rohit-sawant

An amazing book! Interesting read to see how this may have affected Ms. Rule in her life. To look inside of the mind and life of a. Serial killer and yet can anyone really understand that person? Being a friend sitting beside them working with them yet not knowing the evil that dwells beneath it is all inside the pages of the book.

Ann Rule‘s classic true crime novel tells of her friendship with a young man she volunteered with at a call centre, and the years of disbelief and doubt she faced as he became known as one of the most notorious serial killers in the world. This was a slow read for me, but worth the time. She really humanizes the victims which is amazing in a true crime novel.

I finally finished this. Couldn‘t keep up with the buddy read. Part of the problem was the format—I just really don‘t like mass market paperbacks! It was very compelling and I appreciated learning more about Bundy. The way Rule‘s feelings about him changed as she learned more about the man who had been her friend was also interesting. However, it wasn‘t the 100% definitive book on Bundy I had expected. She seems to assume you‘ve read others.

Ann Rule worked overnight at a 24 hour crisis center alongside Ted Bundy. Ann told him about the serial killer articles she was writing. After Bundy was caught, it was hard for Ann to believe that the guy who was saving suicide victims with her was the killer. I found this book most interesting as you begin to wonder what has changed such a personable person into a serial killer. I would highly recommend this book to those who like true crime.
