The Masterpiece
The Masterpiece | Ana Schnabl

The Masterpiece is a love story with tinges of the political thriller, written in a tantalizing prose style. Set in the golden years of 1980s Yugoslavia, it revels in an era of unprecedented freedom of thought and travel, while also revealing the tight grip that the state maintained on the lives of its citizens, not least through its security services and its web of informants.

Bailedbailed

I don't usually bail on bookclub books, but this did nothing for me. Yugoslavia in the 1980s, an editor informing for the security services begins an affair with one of her authors.
I'm halfway through Great Circle, and I decided I'd rather be reading that.

Pickpick

What makes this classic story of adultery between a book editor and a professor/writer different, or at least more interesting, is the story that takes place in the background. The story is set in #Slovenia in the mid-80s, when frictions between the republics of the former Yugoslavia had already begun, and this political changes puts the main characters on different shores. What makes this love story also different is the complex inner … 👇

Simona … inner world of the main character, expressed in complex prose, which forces the reader to think about individual sentences … and with great surprise at the very end. 👊 3y

I like autumn, but unfortunately, that also means less opportunities to read outside … but today is a very nice, warm, sunny day in my part of the world ☀️ and I‘m very happy because of that 😁

MicheleinPhilly I‘m the opposite - once autumn weather sets in I‘m like “Let‘s go OUTSIDE!” I hate the heat. ☺️ 3y
jimfields3 The book sounds interesting, and there are no Litsy reviews so far. I‘ll be curious to see what you think, @Simona 3y
LeahBergen I‘m exactly the same, @MicheleinPhilly ! 3y

Simona @MicheleinPhilly @LeahBergen I don‘t like melting heat, but otherwise - summer is my time to bloom 😘 3y
Simona @jimfield3 Schnabl is a Slovenian author of the younger generation, the book was published last year and I must say that I am quite surprised that there is already a translation. The story is interesting, but I am afraid that much will be lost with the translation, especially if you are not familiar with political events in recent Slovenian history, because the tragedy of the described love story stems from political events, which aren't so ... 3y
Simona @jimfield3 ... comprehensible if you do not know political background. And this book/story definitely isn't a political thriller as is stated in the description. 🙄 3y
