Across the Empty Quarter
Across the Empty Quarter | Wilfred Thesiger
2 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
Restless, gripped by an overwhelming wish to make a name for himself in a world ever more hemmed in by progress and 'civilization', Thesiger (1910-2003) embarked on his amazing journeys across Saudi Arabia's Empty Quarter to test himself and to show what could still be done. The result was a monument both to his resilience and to the Bedu who guided him and who emerge as the book's real heroes. Great Journeys allows readers to travel both around the planet and back through the centuries - but also back into ideas and worlds frightening, ruthless and cruel in different ways from our own. Few reading experiences can begin to match that of engaging with writers who saw astounding things- Great civilisations, walls of ice, violent and implacable jungles, deserts and mountains, multitudes of birds and flowers new to science. Reading these books is to see the world afresh, to rediscover a time when many cultures were quite strange to each other, where legends and stories were treated as facts and in which so much was still to be discovered.

I thoroughly enjoyed that. As well as remembering why abridged books drive me nuts - you seriously CANNOT leave us there! I‘ll have to read Arabian Sands at some point now (this was an extract).

Thesiger travels across the Empty Quarter, the Arabian desert of #Oman and #SaudiArabia, with his Bedu companions, avoiding those who would have an issue with a Christian in their midst. I learnt SO MUCH about camels & desert travelling. Fascinating!

rockpools We‘re into shameless cheating now, but I think I‘ll use this for both countries for #readingasia2021. @BarbaraBB @Librarybelle 3y

Popped into Oxfam to buy hand soap because Superdrug didn‘t have any (?!), and came out with two pretty little travel books. As you do.

squirrelbrain I have some of these too, also from a charity shop. I don‘t have the Thesiger though… 3y
rockpools @squirrelbrain You do now! Well, now in a minute- I might read it first 😁. They look a lot older than they actually are- obviously designed to age gracefully and rapidly! 3y
squirrelbrain You should try and find some more - get the full set of 20! (I have 10, I think) 3y
