The Tsarina's Lost Treasure
The Tsarina's Lost Treasure | Mara Vorhees, Gerald Easter
6 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
A riveting history and maritime adventure about priceless masterpieces originally destined for Catherine the Great. On October 1771, a merchant ship out of Amsterdam, Vrouw Maria, crashed off the stormy Finnish coast, taking her historic cargo to the depths of the Baltic Sea. The vessel was delivering a dozen Dutch masterpiece paintings to Europes most voracious collector: Catherine the Great, Empress of Russia. Among the lost treasures was The Nursery, an oak-paneled triptych by Leiden fine painter Gerrit Dou, Rembrandts most brilliant student and Hollands first international superstar artist. Dous triptych was long the most beloved and most coveted painting of the Dutch Golden Age, and its loss in the shipwreck was mourned throughout the art world. Vrouw Maria, meanwhile, became a maritime legend, confounding would-be salvagers for more than two hundred years. In July 1999, a daring Finnish wreck hunter found Vrouw Maria, upright on the sea floor and perfectly preserved. The Tsarinas Lost Treasure masterfully recounts the fascinating tale of Vrouw Mariaher loss and discoveryweaving together the rise and fall of the artist whose priceless masterpiece was the jewel of the wreckage. Gerald Easter and Mara Vorhees bring to vivid life the personalities that drove (and are still driving) this compelling tale, evoking Robert Massies depiction of Russian high politics and culture, Simon Schamas insights into Dutch Golden Age art and art history, Gary Kinders spirit of, danger and adventure on the beguiling Archipelago Sea.

@Eggs #WondrousWednesday
👸🧐💰Best I could do!
🦋 Georgette Heyer tends to end her books very abruptly.I would LOVE sequels to all her books, specifically Sylvester.Also North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell-how did they navigate the rest of the Industrial revolution?
❤️5 stars! Full review here of Zola's Ladies Delight https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/4785185329

This explains a lot about art

BarbaraBB I am surprised about this. I know they painted in assignment, so lots of portraits, but other than that there are so many different styles and subjects among them I don‘t think this comment explains anything. 2y
Vansa @BarbaraBB so this isn't correct ,then? 2y
BarbaraBB It might be correct but it doesn‘t tell much about the form or quality of the art. I don‘t see why it matters? 2y

Vansa @BarbaraBB I'm not being confrontational here!I thought you were Dutch and would have a deeper perspective on the author's submission that the Dutch masters democratised art by centring regular people and not just religious themes, which is why I asked if you didn't think that was correct.Anyway, it doesn't matter. 2y
BarbaraBB I know, I‘m not either!! I did express myself the wrong way I‘m afraid 😧. And if that‘s what the author means to say, about democratizing art, I think he‘s absolutely right. I thought it meant that the working in assignment led to art being subjective and I of less quality while I didn‘t see why that should be the case. I hope I express it well now 💛 2y
Vansa @BarbaraBB sorry!I posted a quote a bit out of context,the authors expand on this later which I didn't post😀I never looked at it this way,and it gave me a great perspective on why the Dutch Masters are considered so path breaking,apart from being exquisite painters.Really makes me want to visit Amsterdam now!!❤️❤️ 2y
BarbaraBB Let me know when you make it to Amsterdam one day! I love across the Rijksmuseum, famous for its collection of Dutch Masters! 2y
