The Chemistry of Tears | Peter Carey
5 posts | 6 read | 4 to read
An automaton, a man and a woman who can never meet, two stories of loveall are brought to incandescent life in this hauntingly moving novel from one of the finest writers of our time. London 2010: Catherine Gehrig, conservator at the Swinburne museum, learns of the sudden death of her colleague and lover of thirteen years. As the mistress of a married man, she must struggle to keep the depth of her anguish to herself. The one other person who knows Catherines secrether bossarranges for her to be given a special project away from prying eyes in the museums Annexe. Usually controlled and rational, but now mad with grief, Catherine reluctantly unpacks an extraordinary, eerie automaton that she has been charged with bringing back to life. As she begins to piece together the clockwork puzzle, she also uncovers a series of notebooks written by the mechanical creatures original owner: a nineteenth-century Englishman, Henry Brandling, who traveled to Germany to commission it as a magical amusement for his consumptive son. But it is Catherine, nearly two hundred years later, who will find comfort and wonder in Henrys story. And it is the automaton, in its beautiful, uncanny imitation of life, that will link two strangers confronted with the mysteries of creation, the miracle and catastrophe of human invention, and the bodys astonishing chemistry of love and feeling.

The writing here is some of Carey‘s best and there are turns of phrase that just break my heart again and again. Why it doesn‘t get the full five out of five stars is that some of this is as disjointed as the automaton Carey‘s characters are building/restoring, and so maybe I‘m missing some of the meta-ness of this, but there was a sense that I was missing a bit. Still ever so lovely.

Thanks for the tag @BookishMe 😊

1. I borrow about 90% of books from the library. I really don‘t own that many - I‘m always jealous of everyone‘s shelves!
2. Usually a couple of days, unless life gets in the way
3. Tagged book. Couldn‘t get into it all.
Littens, consider yourself tagged 😘

Thanks @Eggs #wondrouswednesday

Bailedbailed

This started out well (it‘s quite funny) but, at 100 pages, I just don‘t feel like picking it back up. So it‘s back to the library...maybe I‘ll try again in a few months

CarolynM I've never got Peter Carey I'm afraid. And, don't shoot me, but I've never seen the charm of Leunig either. 5y
JennyM @CarolynM I went with your 100 page test before I bailed, too! Just wasn‘t holding my attention and I felt no desire to pick it back up. 5y
Freespirit I am not a fan either😳 5y
