Letters from Everest: A First-Hand Account from the Epic First Ascent | George Lowe
1 post | 1 read | 2 to read
60 years after the first ascent of Mount Everest, this book of letters celebrates, in a very personal way, this most majestic of mountains. With exclusive access to the private archives of pioneering New Zealand climber George Lowe, this is a welcome tribute to an unsung hero.

This was a short audiobook narrated by the excellent Dan Stevens, composed of letters written by George Lowe to his family back home. Lowe was one of the climbers in the 1953 expedition which was the first to reach the summit of Mount Everest. It was a really fascinating glimpse into a time where news travelled through letters and radio broadcasts. Also, I appreciated his emphasis that this achievement was a group effort including many sherpas.
