She Is Haunted
She Is Haunted | Paige Clark

I know lots of things now that I'm dead. Peter from Apartment Two has a spastic bladder. My former boss Morgan keeps her toenails in a gold jewellery box. My brother and his wife are trying for a baby. I always excuse myself before things get too heated. I don't know much about my mother yet. I am waiting for grief to catch her, but she mostly seems ashamed-of her body, of what it made. A mother cuts her daughter's hair because her own starts falling out. A woman leaves her boyfriend because he reminds her of a corpse; another undergoes brain surgery to try to live more comfortably in higher temperatures. A widow physically transforms into her husband so that she does not have to grieve. In She Is Haunted, these renditions of the author search for recognition and connection, and, more than anything else, small moments of empathy. But in what world will she move beyond her haunted past and find compassion for herself? With piercing insights into transnational Asian identity, intergenerational trauma and grief, the dynamics of mother-daughter relationships, the inexplicable oddities of female friendship, and the love of a good dog, Paige Clark has crafted an exquisite, moving and sophisticated debut work of fiction. Full of wit and humour, She Is Haunted announces an entrancing new literary voice as contemporary as it is unique. 'The real meets the ethereal here and becomes something all its own. Clark is the best new writer in Australia and this book is like nothing else.' Robert Lukins author of The Everlasting Sunday 'The stories in She is Haunted grapple with a mix of timeless human problems and uniquely contemporary dilemmas: grief, illness, identity, and heartbreak, but also who gets custody of the dog after a break-up, bureaucratic responses to deeply personal relationship issues, and the politics of food. Paige Clark writes with wit, warmth and nuance, using precise, playful language, giving us a collection of (sometimes embarrassingly) relatable characters, sneaky insights and surprising bursts of joy.' Emily Maguire, author of Love Objects and An Isolated Incident 'Paige Clark's stories contain worlds within pages. Like Carmen Maria Machado, she takes ideas and runs with them into strange, often uneasy places. From the ordinary to the bizarre, these compelling stories reveal biting truths about race, relationships and life.' Giselle Au-Nhien Nguyen, writer and critic 'A stunning collection of short stories about identity, connection and trying to make sense of our modern world. Paige Clark is a star.' Hannah-Rose Yee, journalist and writer 'A wondrous spirit animates SHE IS HAUNTED. In sentences of bracing snap and clarity, Clark's stories delight and amuse, even as they expose tender truths and secrets. An astonishing debut.' I'm torn on whether or not I liked this book. Being a compilation of short stories it's easier to say there were some which I enjoyed more than others. There was a consistent thread of themes woven into each story- grief, love, family issues and the need for acceptance, identity, and more. Well written, but overall this collection was full of melancholy and left me feeling rather depressed. Perhaps, however, that was exactly what she intended.

"Lucy's hair was stringy and dyed a garish shade of orange. She wore a sheer top that displayed her pointy nipples and a pair of hiked up metallic bike shorts. Rosa had noticed that Lucy was thin but she was painfully so. A flaccid carrot that had been left in the refrigerator for too long came to mind."

That there is one helluva description, Ms Clark!?????

MatchlessMarie Omg I‘m so mad you can‘t leave picture comments on Litsy because this passage inspires memes 😆 🥕🤨 2mo
monkeygirlsmama She later describes the same character as a "friendly chicken" based, again, on the orange hair. ??? 2mo

There was something strangely relatable about this story. I am nothing like the main character Beth, yet somehow in some way I feel like I connected with her. (Please note: If you have or do read this story, I am not saying that my grief experience is the same. I have never once wanted or tried to evolve into Jon. 😆 But there are overlapping similarities to the grief.🤪)

Today's #libraryhaul was comprised of all random, on the spot selections. Here's hoping I picked good ones! 😁📚

I loved this! Great writing and interesting characters. The stories dealt with similar themes, places, and several had a character named Elizabeth, but the approach was very different from one to the next. I also enjoyed the feeling of the physical book. It opened easily and felt good in my hands. Maybe that's a weird detail to share in a review, but it increased my enjoyment of the book.

I‘m sick (not covid) and I‘m in a book slump too. Not fair to have both at once! So a cup of tea and a collection of short stories to hopefully knock out both problems.

DebinHawaii I am sorry you are sick. I actually do have COVID & it‘s not fun—although I am coming out the tail end of it luckily. Take care of yourself! I don‘t know if you are back home yet but I wanted to check as your #RecioeSwap box was supposed to have been delivered to your front porch on Saturday. I was a bit out of it & didn‘t think to follow up to make sure you got it. 🙏🏼🤞🏼 2y

BookNAround @DebinHawaii I‘m not home yet but I‘ll ask my husband and confirm for you. Also I‘m not going to be back until the 25h now so I‘ll be delayed opening it. I will post when I do but I don‘t want you to wonder and/or think I‘m being unappreciative! 2y
DebinHawaii OK, no worries on the opening date, but if you can let me know if your husband received it, I‘ll stop worrying that it disappeared from your porch. 💜 Take care. 2y
BookNAround @DebinHawaii He found it. And lucky I called him to ask because he had inadvertently recycled our oldest son‘s jury summons and several letters for me that he never would have realized if he hadn‘t been going through the mail stack and wondering where the jury summons went. 🙄 2y

I liked the stories where Clark nudged at the supernatural (or, to put it another way, when things got weird). This is also the first “post-pandemic” fiction I‘ve read that directly and explicitly describes the impact of COVID-19 (so CW for that, and also for dog death). This is a fine debut, showcasing glimpses of good things to come from a young Chinese-American-Australian writer. Full review: https://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/new-releases/
