The Great Mistake
The Great Mistake: A novel | Jonathan Lee
7 posts | 2 read | 5 to read
From the acclaimed author of High Dive comes an enveloping, exultant novel of New York City at the turn of the twentieth century, a story of one man's rise to fame and fortune, and his mysterious murder. Andrew Haswell Green is dead, shot at the venerable age of eighty-three, when he thought life could hold no more surprises. The killing--on Park Avenue, in broad daylight, on Friday the thirteenth--shook the city. Green was born to a poor farmer, yet without him there would be no Central Park, no Metropolitan Museum of Art, no Museum of Natural History, no New York Public Library. And Green had a secret, a life locked within him that now, in the hour of his death--alone, misunderstood--is set to break free. As the detective assigned to Green's case chases his ghost across the city, we meet a wealthy courtesan, a brokenhearted man in a bowler hat, and a lawyer turned politician whose decades-long friendship with Green is the source of both his troubles and his joys. A work of tremendous depth and piercing emotion, The Great Mistake is the story of a city transformed, a murder that made a private man infamous, and a portrait of a singular individual who found the world closed off to him--yet enlarged it.

Seeing my book club today—oddly enough for a non-book related event—and taking along some books I‘ve finished to share with them. Tagged one is probably my favorite of the bunch but there is definitely something for everyone. Excited to find new readers for these books!

vivastory That's so awesome that you're donating these! I see some favorites here, esp. Winter Counts & Memorial. Have you seen the new Vandermeer Picador covers? 2y
Cinfhen Whoa!!! That‘s like winning the lottery 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 2y
Cinfhen I was thinking of suggesting your tagged book for my IRL bookclub!! What do u think?? 2y

BooksNBowls I loooove giving away books! Almost as much as I love getting books.. almost 😉 2y
TracyReadsBooks @Cinfhen I really liked it. The writing is gorgeous and it‘s a very interesting story based, as you may know, on actual events. It‘s a quiet novel, a fascinating story if you are interested in NY at that time. Also leaves you thinking about how the more things change, the more they stay the same. I think it‘s worth reading just for the writing. If your IRL bookclub is up for that sort of thing, it‘s a good choice. 2y

Pickpick

Based on actual events, this is the story of the life & death of Andrew Haswell Green, a self-made man without whom there is no Central Park, MET, or NYPL. It is also, very much, a story about the sacrifices people make to chase their dreams & achieve their goals. In a time/place where rumors could sink careers, Green nevertheless found a way to leave his mark. Beautifully written—Lee writes with stunning efficiency and emotional depth.

Just saw this new title on a US list ... loved the US cover ( see my previous post!) went to preorder it and the U.K. edition couldn‘t be more different if it tried... definitely no #covercrush for the U.K. edition 🥲

AlaMich Usually it‘s the other way around and the UK covers are much nicer, IMO. 3y
Mitch @AlaMich these two covers are just so so different. They look like they belong to different genres not just different books! 🤣 3y
