A brilliant action adventure rooted in African American lore.--New York Times best-selling author Jason Reynolds After reuniting with Ayanna who is now in his world, Tristan travels up the Mississippi in pursuit of his archenemy, King Cotton. Along the way they encounter new haints who are dead set on preventing their progress north to Tristan's hometown of Chicago. It's going to take the gods themselves, a magical vehicle known as the Chariot, and the flame of Afokena to deliver justice once and for all. Tristan is angry. So angry that his magic gloves have begun acting out and catching on fire. So angry that he forgoes everything around him to chase Cotton across Chicago. So angry that he forgot himself. Just that overlaying theme itself takes up a lot of the story. Of which, the story feels a bit all over the place, Final Battle had me a little confused, but it comes together well for Tristan to learn.

Find the pulse of the story. Let the rhythm beat like a heart, and hold on to that pulse once you got it. Don‘t change it, no matter what anybody else says. Even if they call you a liar or selfish, or say you lucky to be here, or tell you to go somewhere else if you so unhappy, you don't let it go. Then speak those words. Tell the story.
