Bug Week
Bug Week: & Other Stories | Airini Beautrais
3 posts | 3 read | 4 to read
A science educator in domestic chaos fetishises Scandinavian furniture and champagne flutes. A group of white-collar deadbeats attend a swinger's party in the era of drunk Muldoon. A pervasive smell seeps through the walls of a German housing block. A seabird performs at an open-mic night.Bug Week is a scalpel-clean examination of male entitlement, a dissection of death, an agar plate of mundanity. From 1960s Wellington to post-Communist Germany, Bug Week traverses the weird, the wry and the grotesque in a story collection of human taxonomy.

Like most collections of short stories, I enjoyed some of these stories more than others, but the writing was always sharp and the observations on point. I can see why this received NZ's highest literary prize. Thanks again Paula😘
@Centique

Centique I felt just the same. Hope she writes a novel soon. And what a view of the harbour bridge! 😍 Hope you have had some fun shopping and some nice meals out on your trip! 2y
Cathythoughts Yes, great view ❤️ 2y
CarolynM @Centique @Cathythoughts I recommend the Cafe on the roof of the Museum of Contemporary Art when there's no cruise ship in port - the view is wonderful🙂 2y

I don‘t often read brand new fiction or short story collections but this just won a major NZ fiction prize so I thought I would give it a go. Beautrais writing style really appeals. Her stories are character driven and within moments of each story I was captivated. The people, places and stories felt strangely recognisable - maybe that‘s the impact of reading a NZ writer for a change. Behind the seemingly ordinary are themes of ⬇️

Centique misogyny, power and abuse, broken relationships and personalities who don‘t quite fit in. While most are quirky and tender, a few are deeply disturbing. There are minimal amounts of bugs 😋 3y
Centique I was thinking this is the sort of book @ClairesReads would read and there you are stacking it ☺️👋👋 I‘ll be so interested to hear your thoughts when you get to it. 3y
CarolynM Definitely stacking this one🙂 3y
Reggie This sounds good. 3y
ClairesReads @Centique haha how about that! I‘ve got a copy sitting on my shelf- you reminded me about how much I want to read it! 3y
