Thirst
Thirst | Amelie Nothomb
3 posts | 5 read | 4 to read
In her twenty-eighth novel in as many years, best-selling Belgian novelist and international literary superstar Amlie Nothomb takes on a story for the ages: the life of Jesus. In a first-person voice as wry as it is wise, Nothomb narrates Jesus's final days, from his trial to his crucifixion to the resurrection. Amid asides about his relationships with his mother and Judas, his love for Mary Magdalene, and his many miracles, we find a man struggling with his humanity and his exceptional nature, straddling the line between human and deity, the son of a formless, omnipotent creator in the fallible form of a man.

My second novel by this author and again I am delighted to have found her. In 92 pages Nothomb narrates the last day of the life of Jesus. When I grabbed the book from the library I had no idea that‘s what the story was about. Profound insights, great questions, fierce love, and even some laugh out loud humor is packed into this novel. I ran to the web to purchase a copy to pass on to friends. I love this author‘s mind.

CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian @Suet624 Metaphysiques des Tubes was the French title. Looks like it was translated as The Character of Rain. I don't even remember what it was about, just that I loved it! 2y

This is Jesus‘ inner monologue concentrated on his last days - trial, crucifixion and resurrection. The form of the story and prose is very simple in the contrast to the content. Some very powerful and thought provoking moments about religion and meanings of it.

There are many books to be found, where Jesus tells us his story. But this one is written by Amélie Nothomb, and therefore exceptional. I've never before witnessed a Jesus more real, more human like the one here. I couldn't stop thinking of Him sitting in a Starbucks, in deep need to get everything off his soul that's bothering Him.
Some parts of the text are highly critical, therefore, this book isn't for everybody. As a reader you have to ⬇️

Jari-chan to be able to take a look at the New Testament from a whole new point of view. We're talking about a book by Amélie Nothomb after all. @TheAromaofBooks #BookSpinBingo 3y
