Toksvig's Almanac 2021
Toksvig's Almanac 2021: An Eclectic Meander Through the Historical Year by Sandi Toksvig | Sandi Toksvig
5 posts | 3 read | 1 to read
'Fierce, funny and long overdue - I read this book out loud to anyone who'd listen.' Adam Kay 'Toksvig's Almanac is intended merely as a starting point for your own discoveries. Find a fabulous (or infamous) woman mentioned and, please, go looking for more of her story. The names mentioned are merely temptations. Amuse-bouches for the mind, if you like. How I would have loved to have written out in detail each tale there is to be told, but then this book would have been too heavy to lift.' Let Sandi Toksvig guide you on an eclectic meander through the calendar, illuminating neglected corners of history to tell tales of the fascinating figures you didn't learn about at school. From revolutionary women to serial killers, pirate nuns to pioneering civil rights activists, doctors to dancing girls, artists to astronauts, these pages commemorate women from all around the world who were pushed to the margins of historical record. Amuse your bouche with: Belle Star, American Bandit Queen Lady Murasaki, author of the world's first novel Madame Ching, the most successful pirate of all time Maud Wagner, the first female tattoo artist Begum Samru, Indian dancer and ruler who led an army of mercenaries Ins de Castro, crowned Queen Consort of Portugal six years after her death Ida B. Wells, activist, suffragist, journalist and co-founder of the NAACP Eleanor G. Holm, disqualified from the 1936 Berlin Olympics for drinking too much champagne These stories are interspersed with helpful tips for the year, such as the month in which one is most likely to be eaten by a wolf, and the best time to sharpen your sickle. Explore a host of annual events worth travelling for, from the Olney Pancake Race in Wiltshire to the Danish Herring Festival, or who would want to miss Serbia's World Testicle Cooking Championship? As witty and entertaining as it is instructive, Toksvig's Almanac is an essential companion to each day of the year.

A greal companion for the past year. I enjoyed learning about women whose stories deserve to be told. Toksvig tells their stories with her usual crisp style and dry wit.

I have been reading this since January (trying my best to keep up with the calendar!) and it was a really interesting read!

Each month started with some info about the month and a poem, and every day was dedicated to a new and interesting woman. There is also a set of YouTube videos by Sandy Toksvig apparently which I may check out, which was the inspiration for the almanac (voxtox).

Interesting tidbit for #Morocco #FoodAndLit in the almanac today!

Sayyida al Hurra died on the 14th July 1561
She was the queen of pirates in Tétouan, Northern Morocco from 1515 for thirty years! She was the last person to legitimately have the title al Hurra (Queen) and when she married the Berber king of Morocco Ahmed al-Wattasi she refused to leave Tétouan. Apparently this is the only time a Moroccan king has married away from the capital Fez!

Butterfinger That is some cool facts. 3y

I wanted to summarise the most interesting (IMO) women from January but there were too many!

January covered doctors, Hollywood stars, Nobel prize winners, chefs, explorers/cartographers, rulers, marathon runners, astronomers, campaigners against slavery, even Granny Smith to name but a few.

I‘m looking forward to feb already! Speaking of, we survived Wolf month (Jan), the month you were most likely to be eaten by a Wolf back in the day! Yay us!

I am planning on reading this one throughout the year, sticking as close to the actual day as possible!

It looks really interesting :)

rabbitprincess I put this on my Christmas list and am hoping it is under the tree at my parents‘ place! I‘ll find out at Easter, if it‘s safe to travel within the province by then 😬 3y
Bookworm54 @rabbitprincess I hope it is safe for you to go see them, if it is under the tree or not! ☺️ 3y
