House of Hidden Mothers
House of Hidden Mothers | Meera Syal
3 posts | 4 read | 11 to read
Life hasn't always been easy for Shyama, a woman in her mid-forties whose husband abandoned her when their daughter was still young. But she has finally found happiness with Toby, a man ten years her junior. She and Toby want to have a child together, but Shyama's doctor tells her that her womb has become "inhospitable."("An inhospitable womb! There, she had been looking for a title for her autobiography.") While Shyama and Toby begin their search for the perfect surrogate, four thousand miles away a young woman in rural India named Mala becomes convinced that carrying a child for an international couple will be her ticket out of poverty--and as her life intersects with Shyama's, the two women soon discover that an apparently simple arrangement may be far more complicated than it once seemed.

Pickpick

I have a huge girl-crush on Meera Syal so I was always going to enjoy listening to her read her novel, but I loved it even more than I expected. She covers a huge amount of ground in this story of a second generation British Indian woman and her significantly younger partner pursuing parenthood via surrogacy in India. I felt completely immersed in the family dynamics and Indian culture. I'd recommend the audio for Meera's lovely voice & accents.

CarolynM I think you'd enjoy this @Cinfhen - lots of meaty social/cultural/moral issues. I'm going to listen to this one next 4y

A great book for Audio, Indian and English accents were lovely. Some of the obvious difficulties with surrogacy were uncovered in this novel about a British couple, with discordant ages and ethnicities, who search for a way to get pregnant. This may not be the most wonderfully written book, but was still very enjoyable.
