Olympic Pride, American Prejudice
Olympic Pride, American Prejudice: The Untold Story of 18 African Americans Who Defied Jim Crow and Adolf Hitler to Compete in the 1936 Berlin Olympics | Travis Thrasher, Blair Underwood, Deborah Riley Draper
4 posts | 2 read | 1 to read
Discover the astonishing, inspirational, and largely unknown true story of the eighteen African American athletes who competed in the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games, defying the racism of both Nazi Germany and the Jim Crow South. Set against the turbulent backdrop of a segregated United States, sixteen black men and two black women are torn between boycotting the Olympic Games in Nazi Germany or participating. If they go, they would represent a country that considered them second-class citizens and would compete amid a strong undercurrent of Aryan superiority that considered them inferior. Yet, if they stayed, would they ever have a chance to prove them wrong on a global stage? To be better than anyone ever expected? Five athletes, full of discipline and heart, guide readers through this harrowing and inspiring journey. Theres a young and sometimes feisty Tidye Pickett from Chicago, whose lithe speed makes her the first African American woman to compete in the Olympic Games; a quiet Louise Stokes from Malden, Massachusetts, who breaks records across the Northeast with humble beginnings training on railroad tracks. We find Mack Robinson in Pasadena, California, setting an example for his younger brother, Jackie Robinson; and the unlikely competitor Archie Williams, a lanky book-smart teen in Oakland takes home a gold medal. Then theres Ralph Metcalfe, born in Atlanta and raised in Chicago, who becomes the wise and fierce big brother of the group. Drawing on over five years of research, Draper and Thrasher bring to life a timely story of perseverance and the will to beat unsurmountable odds. From burning crosses set on the Robinsonss lawn to a Pennsylvania small town on fire with praise and parades when the athletes return from Berlin, Olympic Pride, American Prejudice is full of emotion, grit, political upheaval, and the American dream. Capturing a powerful and untold chapter of history, the narrative is also a celebration of the courage, commitment, and accomplishments of these talented athletes and their impact on race, sports and inclusion around the world.

I grabbed this book at the library with high hopes that it would give me a similar reading experience as “The Boys in the Boat.” Alas, this was not that. The writing is sometimes repetitive and clunky. But still a pick for the fascinating information and stories about these trail-blazing Olympic athletes.

My hubby and I found a list of the farm stands with the best apple cider donuts in Connecticut. And that sounded like a challenge if ever we heard one! So we took a drive today to two of the farms. Time for a side-by-side taste test — accompanied by a mug of tea and a new book, of course. This is serious research, after all.

Texreader That‘s so awesome!! 4y

I've tagged my favorite read from the prompts.

I loved finding books to fit each of these. My nephew and husband thought I had lost my mind though when I built my blanket fort in the living room, but all the dogs and cats loved it. 😀

My completed board for #SummerFun. @StayCurious @4thhouseontheleft

StayCurious You‘re amazing! I‘m so glad you made a fort haha! 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I purposely built my fort right after my guy left for work. The dog was suspicious, but by the end of the day he was sad that it had to come down. 4y

Loved this one! 💚 While I don't know much about track and field, or even the Olympics, I devoured this book. Seeing the discrimination these individuals went through, and yet they never gave up, was inspiring. At the end of each chapter is a mini history lesson detailing Hitler's rise to power and foreshadowing his ultimate end.

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! 4y
